# When the Adjuster Photographs Your Loss, Shoot These Angles Too

An adjuster photographs enough to justify the estimate that gets written, which is a narrower job than protecting your file. Shoot the undercarriage, the undamaged opposite side, seams away from the impact, aftermarket equipment, and a scale reference. Keep original camera files rather than screenshots, and narrate a slow walk-around video.

## The short answer

The camera in an adjuster's hand is a scope tool. It captures what the estimate will pay for and stops there. Your job is the rest of the record: the parts nobody photographed because nobody planned to pay for them. Undercarriage, opposite side, interior stress marks, sealant seams, and anything you bolted on yourself. Shoot in daylight, hold the original files, and date the set before the unit moves into a bay.

## What is the adjuster's camera actually for?

An adjuster's photo set is an attachment to an estimate, and it is built to answer three questions for a desk reviewer who will never stand next to the unit. Is this the insured vehicle. Did the described loss occur. Do the operations on the estimate match visible damage.

Most carriers hand their adjusters a photo requirement sheet, and the shoot follows that sheet in order. Nothing about the process is hostile. It is simply narrow. A requirement sheet is written to support payment of the lines an estimator already intends to write, not to preserve evidence for operations nobody has thought of yet.

That distinction matters because the file outlives the visit. Reinspectors, supplement reviewers, appraisers and total loss valuation staff all work from the same folder. ## Which frames does a field adjuster usually capture?

The standard set runs eight to fourteen frames on a straightforward loss and follows a predictable order.

- Four corners, shot at roughly forty-five degrees, establishing the whole unit and its general condition.
- The VIN plate or serial tag, close enough to read every character without cropping.
- The odometer or hour meter, which anchors mileage and use at the time of loss.
- A wide frame of the damaged side, taken far enough back to show where the damage starts and stops.
- Two or three close-ups of the impact zone itself, usually at the deepest deformation.
- One overall from the front three-quarter, which becomes the thumbnail on the file.

An experienced adjuster may add a frame of a crushed bumper bracket or a torn sealant bead if it supports a line already in mind. That is the pattern to watch. Frames get added when they justify a line item, not when they document a condition. On heavier losses the set expands, and on a large-format unit the adjuster may shoot the damaged side in overlapping thirds so the panel joints stay readable. Ask which frames the carrier requires. Most adjusters will tell you plainly.

## What gets left out of a standard photo set?

Everything that does not yet have a line item attached.

The undercarriage is first. Frame rails, crossmembers, suspension mounts and the underside of a floor structure absorb load that never shows on a painted surface, and almost no standard set includes a single frame from below. Second is the opposite side. Comparison photography is how you prove a gap grew or a door sagged, and without a matched shot of the undamaged side there is nothing to compare against.

Interior stress evidence gets missed constantly. Cabinet doors that no longer latch, a cracked corner at a wall-to-ceiling joint, a slide-out that binds at one rail. Aftermarket equipment is skipped because the estimating system has no code for it. Adjacent panels rarely get a pre-loss condition frame, so later blending arguments start from zero. And almost nobody puts a scale reference in the shot, which means a two inch buckle and a six inch buckle look identical on a phone screen.

## How do you shoot the gaps without getting in the way?

Let the adjuster work first. Interrupting the required set slows the inspection and sours the conversation. When the camera goes down, ask whether you can add your own frames, and then move quickly.

Start with a slow walk-around video, narrating as you go. Say the date out loud, say where you are standing, and name each area as it enters frame. Narration converts a video into a statement, and it is far harder to dispute than a silent clip. Then shoot stills in three tiers for every damaged area: wide for context, medium for the assembly, close for the detail. Put a tape measure, a folding rule or a common coin in at least one frame per area so scale is fixed.

Shoot in daylight if you can, with the sun behind you, and take a second pass with the flash on to lift shadow out of recessed seams. Get low and shoot up along the rocker line. Move the originals off your phone the same day and store them untouched. Screenshots strip the embedded capture data, and that data is often what settles a dispute about when a condition existed.

## Where do your photos actually get used later?

The first use is the supplement. When teardown exposes damage nobody could see, a photo of the exterior taken before anything moved establishes that the hidden damage was consistent with the impact and not with an older event. The second is reinspection, where a carrier sends a second set of eyes and your earlier frames set the baseline.

Photographs also carry weight in valuation. On a total loss, condition drives the number, and an owner with a dated set of clean interior and exterior frames is arguing from evidence while the valuation report is arguing from a generic condition grade. There is a resale use too. A few seasons down the road a buyer asks what happened, and a folder showing the damage, the repair operations and the finished panel is a stronger answer than a verbal one. We have seen owners hold their price at sale because the file was complete.

## What the shop adds to the photo record at intake

Every unit that comes through the gate at our Yorba Linda facility on La Palma Avenue gets photographed again before a technician touches it. That set is heavier than an adjuster's: full perimeter, all glass, every seam on the damaged quadrant, the undercarriage on a lift where the unit fits, and close frames of any prior repair we find. The building runs 35,000 square feet, so we can stage a unit and shoot it in even light rather than in a parking lot.

During teardown the record continues. Fasteners come off into labelled bags, and each bag gets photographed next to the assembly it came from. Substrate damage is shot in place before anything is cut or straightened, because once metal is sectioned the original condition is gone.
