# Catch Absorption Fridge Failure While the Box Is Still Cold

Look for yellow or green sodium chromate residue and an ammonia odor at the rear of the unit, a gurgle that changes character, a scaled or discolored boiler tube, a freezer that holds while the fresh food section climbs, and cooling that returns only after the unit sits switched off for a day.

## The short answer

An absorption refrigerator gives warning before it quits. Yellow or green powder at the back of the unit, a sharp ammonia odor in the compartment, a boiler tube that has darkened, or a freezer that stays hard while the fresh food section drifts upward all indicate the sealed cooling unit is failing. Confirm level and ventilation first. Then rule out door seals, the thermistor, the control board and the heat source before condemning anything.

## How an absorption unit makes cold in the first place

There is no compressor. A sealed steel circuit holds ammonia, water, hydrogen gas and sodium chromate as a corrosion inhibitor. Heat applied to the boiler, from an LP burner or a 120 volt element, drives ammonia out of solution as vapor. The vapor rises, condenses in the finned condenser at the top of the assembly, then flows into the evaporator where it meets hydrogen. That meeting lets liquid ammonia evaporate at low temperature, and the evaporation is the cold. The mixture falls into the absorber, water reclaims the ammonia, and the solution returns to the boiler.

Two consequences matter for diagnosis. Nothing moves mechanically, so there is no pump to fail and no compressor to seize. The failure modes are chemistry and plumbing. And the whole cycle depends on gravity and on heat leaving the back of the box, which is why level and ventilation are not accessories.

## Five signs a cooling unit is going

1. Yellow or greenish residue at the back. Sodium chromate escapes with the ammonia and dries as powder on the boiler tube, on the insulation, or on the floor of the compartment. Paired with a sharp ammonia smell, it is conclusive.
2. A change in the gurgling. These units gurgle in normal operation. What matters is the change: a steady percolating sound that turns intermittent, or a hard slug noise where there used to be a trickle.
3. A discolored or scaled boiler tube. Overheating from an internal blockage bakes the tube. Look for a dark band or flaking scale where the burner flame meets the steel.
4. A freezer that works while the fresh food section will not hold. One evaporator serves both. When the lower section drifts up into the fifties while the freezer stays hard, circulation through the lower coil is failing.
5. Cooling that returns only after the unit sits switched off for a day. That is the classic blockage signature. Sitting lets a crystallized plug redissolve and flow resumes, briefly. It always comes back.

Any one of the first three settles it. The last two together settle it as well.

## Level, ventilation and the failures they cause

Running out of level is the most common self-inflicted cause of a blocked cooling unit. The ammonia and water solution has to run downhill through narrow tubing. Tip the box far enough for long enough and solution pools where it should be flowing, local temperature climbs, and sodium chromate drops out of the mixture as a solid plug. Builders generally publish a tolerance in the neighborhood of a few degrees side to side and a little more front to back. Parking on a sloped pad overnight with the fridge running is how a healthy cooling unit gets killed.

Ventilation is the other half. Air enters at the lower sidewall vent, passes across the boiler and the condenser fins, and leaves through the upper vent or a roof vent. A baffle sits behind the unit to force that air across the fins rather than letting it slip past. If the baffle was left out after a rear wall repair, or the upper vent is packed with debris or a bird nest, heat stalls behind the box. The cycle slows, the boiler runs hotter than design, and the tube pays for it. Add a small circulation fan on units that were marginal from the factory.

## Ruling out the things that are not the cooling unit

Half the fridges brought in on a suspected cooling unit leave with a different answer, and the checks are quick.

Door seals come first. Close the door on a strip of paper and pull. If it slides out with no drag, the gasket is not sealing and the box will never hold, whatever the cooling unit is doing. Check all four sides, both doors.

The thermistor is next. It clips to a fin in the fresh food section, and its exact position on that fin sets the cut-in point. A clip that slid an inch changes the behavior of the whole box. Read the thermistor cold and warm against the resistance chart before replacing it.

Then the control board, which fails often enough on these appliances to be a first-tier suspect when there is no cooling on either heat source. Then the LP side: supply pressure, a spider web in the burner tube, an igniter electrode with the wrong gap or a carbon bridge across it. Then the 120 volt element, which you read for resistance and current draw. ## Cooling unit replacement versus whole fridge replacement

A cooling unit swap keeps the cabinet, the doors, the trim panels, the controls and the wall opening. The old sealed assembly comes off the back, a new or rebuilt one goes on, thermal mastic gets packed into the boiler pocket, and the box goes back in. It is labor-heavy work with a large, awkward part and a tight compartment.

Replacing the whole appliance makes more sense in three situations: the cabinet liner is cracked or the insulation has been soaked, the door frames or hinges are damaged past repair, or the owner wants to convert to a compressor-driven 12 volt box and is ready for the electrical load that comes with it.

## Habits that extend the service life of the unit

- Park level whenever the fridge is running. On a sloped site, move the coach or switch the fridge off. A few hours of storage temperature costs less than a cooling unit.
- Precool before loading. Give the box eight hours empty, then load it with items that are already cold. Loading a warm box with warm groceries asks for capacity it does not have.
- Leave space between items. These boxes cool by circulation, not by blast. A packed shelf creates a pocket the thermistor never sees.
- Clean the condenser fins and the boiler area twice a year. Dust on the fins is heat that never leaves.
- Confirm the baffle is in place any time someone works behind the rear vent. Techs remove them and forget them.
- Run the burner periodically even when the coach lives on shore power. An unused orifice collects debris.
- Do not ignore a change in sound. The gurgle is the only running diagnostic the unit gives you at no cost.
