# If One Trailer Tire Keeps Wearing Out First, Look at How You Load

One tire wearing faster than the other three points to a load or geometry problem rather than a bad tire. Inner shoulder wear suggests camber loss or overload on that corner, feathering suggests toe error, and cupping suggests suspension movement. Weigh each corner before replacing anything.

## The short answer

One tire out of four going bald early is data. The tread face records the direction of the error: worn inner shoulder means that corner is running negative camber or carrying more than its share, worn outer shoulder means the opposite, sharp feathered edges across the ribs mean the axle is steering slightly sideways, and scalloped cups mean the wheel is bouncing. Loading explains most of it. Geometry explains the rest.

## What is the wear pattern telling you?

Run a bare hand across the tread from inside to outside, then outside to inside. Your palm reads sharpness that your eyes miss.

### Inner shoulder versus outer shoulder

Trailer axles are built with a slight positive camber so the tubes flex flat under rated load. Load them past that and the camber goes negative, the inner shoulders take the contact patch, and the inside ribs wear off while the outside ribs still look new. If both tires on one axle show it, suspect load. If only one does, suspect that side specifically: a bent tube, a tired spring on that corner, or a couple hundred extra pounds parked over it.

Outer shoulder wear on a loaded trailer is less common and usually means the axle is under loaded relative to its rating, or that the tube has been bent upward at the center by a strike.

### Feathering and cupping

Feathering is a saw tooth edge on each tread rib, sharp when you sweep one direction and smooth the other. That is toe error, the axle pointing a degree or two off square, and the tire scrubbing sideways a small amount every foot of travel. It is quiet, it does not affect towing feel much, and it will eat a set of ST tires in one season.

Cupping is a series of scalloped low spots around the circumference. On a trailer with no shocks it points at the suspension letting the wheel hop: a seized equalizer, a worn bushing, a broken center bolt, or a wheel and tire assembly that was never balanced.

## Why does one side of the trailer carry more weight?

Look at the floor plan rather than the running gear. The galley run, the refrigerator, the pantry, the water heater and often the fresh tank are grouped on one side because plumbing and cabinetry are easier to build that way. Add a slide room on that same wall and the bias grows again, since the slide box, its rails and its flooring are permanent weight offset from the centerline.

Then the owner loads the heavy bins into whichever bay is easiest to reach, which is usually the curb side, and the imbalance compounds. A CAT ticket will never show it, because those pads read full width. Corner scales or four portable pads on a flat lot will. Owners who store in Corona and load in the driveway are frequently a few hundred pounds heavier on one side than the other without ever having done anything wrong.

Toy haulers make this worse in an interesting way, because the cargo moves. Two machines strapped down slightly off center in a [toy hauler](/vehicles/campers-and-trailers/toy-hauler) garage put a repeatable bias on the same tire every trip, and the ramp door and its hardware are already heavy and already aft.

## How does a tandem shuffle load between its two axles?

A leaf spring tandem shares load through the equalizer, a steel link on a center bolt that pivots as one axle rides up a bump and lets the other take a share. When it works, load transfer is temporary. When the equalizer bolt has rusted solid, or the bushings have worn oval, the link stops pivoting and the two axles stop cooperating. One axle then carries a disproportionate static load, and the tire on the heavy corner of the heavy axle wears first.

Worn shackle bushings do something subtler. The extra play lets the axle shift fore and aft under braking and cornering, which changes toe dynamically. You get feathering that appears on one axle only, usually the rear one, and it comes back after new tires because the play is still there. Rocking each tire fore and aft by hand with the axle unloaded, and watching the shackle rather than the tire, finds it in a minute.

## Do torsion and leaf axles fail differently?

They do, and the wear patterns follow. A Dexter torsion axle has no equalizer and no load sharing at all, since each arm works against its own rubber cords inside the tube. Every dip in the pavement loads one axle fully, and as the rubber takes a set with age the arm droops, camber goes negative on that side, and the inner shoulder starts disappearing. A drooping torsion arm also shows as a fender gap that is visibly smaller on one corner.

Leaf axles share load but sag. A spring that has lost its arch on one side drops that corner, changes camber slightly, and shifts weight onto its partner axle through the equalizer. The tell is a spring pack whose leaves have flattened compared to the other side, easiest to see by sighting along both springs from the rear of the trailer.

## When is it no longer a loading problem?

Loading and worn suspension parts explain most single tire wear. A bent spindle or a tweaked axle tube explains the rest, and those need measurement rather than opinion.

On a level floor, with the tires off the ground, camber can be read off the hub face and compared side to side. Toe is checked by measuring across the tread faces front and rear of each tire. Squareness is checked by measuring diagonally from a common point on the frame, usually the coupler or a marked spot on the front crossmember, to the same point on each spindle. Those two diagonals should match closely. A difference means an axle has shifted in its hangers or the frame itself is out, which is [frame and chassis straightening](/services/collision-and-structural/frame-straightening) territory rather than a suspension parts swap.

A bowed axle tube is checked with a long straightedge along the top of the tube. Any daylight in the middle, or a camber reading that has gone from slightly positive to flat or negative with no load on it, means the tube is done. ## How to describe the wear when you book the work

Say which corner, which shoulder, and how fast. "Curb side rear axle, inner shoulder down to the belt in one season, other three tires fine" tells a technician more than a photograph does. Add whether the trailer tows straight, whether you hear a rhythmic hum that changes with speed, and whether the fender gaps look even. Note the last loaded axle weights if you have them.
