# Before You Trust an Old Repair, Pull the Trim and Look Behind the Filler

> Overspray, mismatched texture and a soft body line are cheap clues. They show where somebody worked, and whether they fixed the structure or just covered it.

Evidence of an older repair shows up as texture that does not match the next panel, overspray on rubber and inside wheel wells, a body line that goes soft, and fasteners with fresh driver marks. Those clues mark the work area. What matters is whether the structure underneath was repaired or simply skinned over.

## The short answer

Evidence of previous body work is not itself a problem. Plenty of repairs are done properly. The question is whether the person who did it replaced damaged structure or covered it, and the surface almost always tells you where to look even when it will not tell you what happened. Find the boundary of the repaired area first using texture, overspray and fastener marks. Then decide whether the structure underneath that boundary was ever addressed.

## What a repaired panel gives away in reflection and texture

Start with orange peel. Factory finish on an RV or a truck body carries a consistent texture across a whole side because it was sprayed in one process with one gun setup. A refinished panel almost never matches exactly. Look for a section where the peel is coarser, finer or simply different in pattern from the panel beside it. Get your eye close and low and compare across a seam rather than staring at one spot.

Then sight the body line. Every molded panel has intentional geometry: a character line, a radius at a cap, a crown across a door skin. Filler cannot hold a crisp line the way the original tooling did. Look down the line from one end and watch for a place where it softens, wanders, or loses its shoulder and turns into a gentle bulge. That soft section is the middle of the repair.

Color is the least reliable clue on its own. A [blended spot repair](/services/paint-and-refinishing/spot-repair-and-blend-matching) done well is invisible in color, and a badly faded factory panel can look mismatched with no repair history at all. Trust texture and geometry over hue.

## Overspray is the honest witness

Nobody masks perfectly, and overspray is very hard to remove from anything porous or textured. It is the most useful single clue on the whole vehicle.

Check the places people forget. Rubber seals around the entry and baggage doors, where overspray sits as a dusty film that stays matte while the surrounding rubber is satin. The inside lip of the wheel wells. The back side of mud flaps. Marker light lenses and their gaskets. Black plastic trim, where a light haze shows plainly. Even the tread edges of a tire that was on the vehicle at the time.

Overspray also has a direction. It fades away from where the gun was, so a heavy deposit on one side of a wheel well and nothing on the other narrows down which panel was being sprayed. Follow the gradient back to the source.

## Fasteners and sealant tell you the sequence

The order in which materials were applied is often more revealing than their condition.

- Sealant applied over paint rather than under it. On original assembly, the flange gets bedded and the panel gets finished, so paint sits on top of or beside the seam. A bead that clearly lies on a painted surface, with paint continuing underneath it, went on after the fact.
- Fresh driver marks on screw heads that should be untouched, especially along a window flange, a corner extrusion or a skirt panel. Compare against the same fastener line on the opposite side of the unit.
- Mixed fastener types in one run. Three stainless screws in a line of twenty painted ones is somebody's afternoon.
- Silicone anywhere near a window. Windows are bedded in butyl tape and secured with a flange, and silicone in that joint means the window was reset by someone who did not have the right material. - Sealant color and gloss that differ across a single continuous seam, which means the seam was opened partway along its length.

## Feeling for filler: magnet on steel, tap on laminate

The technique depends on what the panel is made of, and RVs and truck bodies give you both.

On a steel truck body or a steel cab panel, a small rare earth magnet wrapped in soft cloth is the fastest tool available. Slide it across the surface and feel the pull. Strong and consistent means paint over metal. Weak or absent means enough filler to lift the magnet off the steel, and if the drop off is abrupt you have found the edge of the repair. Sweep in lines and note where the pull changes.

On fiberglass, filon or a laminated wall, no magnet will help. Use sound instead. Filler over laminate reads as a duller, shorter, heavier click than the surrounding panel, because the added mass damps the strike. Compare against the same location on the other side of the unit rather than against memory. Thick filler on a laminated sidewall is a specific worry, because filler is rigid and the panel under it flexes. It cracks in service along the perimeter of the repair, which is how the outline reveals itself eventually anyway.

## What actually gets hidden under a good looking patch

The reason any of this matters is what tends to be behind it.

A skin patched over a broken frame tube is the common one. Welded aluminum tube framing takes an impact, a tube cracks at a weld, and the outer skin gets cut out, backed, bonded and refinished without anyone touching the tube. The panel looks correct. The wall has lost a member.

A corner rebuilt without replacing the crushed post is the same idea in another location: new extrusion, neat sealant, and a vertical member underneath that is still folded. A floor patched from below with sheet aluminum and adhesive, covering rot instead of replacing decking. A window reset in silicone that will leak at the first flex. None of these are visible from the outside once paint is on. All of them are findable if you know where somebody worked.

## When it is worth doing this inspection

Two moments. The first is before a long haul with weight in the unit, because a hidden structural defect that has been quiet at low speed on surface streets behaves very differently loaded and sustained at freeway pace. If your route out of Eastvale puts you on SR-91 fully loaded, the corner you never looked behind is going to be worked harder than it has been in years.

The second is before new work gets quoted on or near the same area. ## What pulling it apart will show you, and what it will not

Be realistic about disassembly. Removing an extrusion, a wheel well liner or an interior panel shows framing condition, fastener engagement, whether a member was replaced or spliced, what adhesive was used, and whether corrosion or rot has started around the old work. That is usually enough to decide what to do next.

What a teardown will not tell you is how the damage happened, how long ago, or whether the unit was ever measured. A structure can be straight and still have been repaired badly, and it can be visibly repaired and still be sound. It also says nothing about the next panel over.
