Refinishing a recreational vehicle is a scale problem before it is a color problem. A single sidewall can present more square footage than an entire passenger car, and it presents that area as a flat plane where every imperfection reads. Paint has to go on wet enough to flow out across that distance without running at the bottom edge, which means booth airflow, temperature, material selection and gun technique all have to cooperate over a much longer spray pass than automotive work involves.

Then there is what is underneath. Recreational vehicles present gelcoated fiberglass, painted fiberglass, bare aluminum, painted aluminum, ABS trim and previously repaired areas of unknown history, sometimes all within a few feet of each other. Each requires its own preparation and its own adhesion promoter. A refinish that ignores those transitions will lift at exactly the boundary between two substrates, usually within the first year, and always at the most visible point.

The third variable is age. A coach that has spent years parked outdoors in the Inland Empire has a finish that no longer matches its own paint code. Sun exposure shifts pigment, flattens gloss and does it unevenly, so the roof edge and the lower skirt are frequently different colors on the same vehicle. Matching means reading the actual surface with a spectrophotometer and spraying out cards until the panel disappears, not looking up a formula.

## Booth Capacity and Why It Determines Quality

A downdraft booth long enough to enclose a full length recreational vehicle changes what is achievable. Inside a booth, air moves in a controlled direction, temperature is stable, and airborne contamination is filtered. Outside one, dust settles into wet clear, temperature swings alter flash times mid panel, and overspray lands on everything. Shops without adequate booth length either paint in the open or paint in sections and hope the sections match. Neither produces a finish that holds up to inspection.

Cure capacity matters as much as spray capacity. A coach occupying the booth while it flashes and cures blocks every other job behind it. Adequate cure space allows a vehicle to move out of the spray area between coats and stages, which keeps schedules realistic on multi vehicle weeks. That is a logistics detail with a direct effect on how long an owner waits, which is why it belongs in a conversation about paint quality at all.

## Color Matching Against a Sun Aged Finish

The factory code is a starting point and rarely the answer. A spectrophotometer reads the actual panel and returns a formula adjusted for how that specific surface has weathered. From there, spray out cards get produced and compared to the panel under multiple light sources, because a match that reads correctly under booth lighting can be visibly wrong in direct sun. Metallic and pearl finishes add orientation effects that only show up on a sprayed card, never in a mixing cup.

Gelcoat complicates the exercise further. Pigmented gelcoat fades differently than automotive topcoat and cannot be matched with the same reasoning. Where a repair sits within an original gelcoat surface, the choice is between matching gelcoat directly or converting the area to a painted finish that can be blended more widely. Both are legitimate. The right call depends on the surrounding condition and on how long the owner intends to keep the coach.

## Blending Versus Full Panel Refinishing

Blending means carrying color out beyond the repair into adjacent undamaged area so the transition becomes invisible, then clearing the whole region as one. On a small repair in a large flat sidewall, blending is usually the only way to hide the work, because a hard edge between old and new finish is detectable no matter how good the match. Carriers sometimes question blend area on an estimate, which is why the blend extent gets documented photographically before work starts.

Full panel refinishing applies when damage covers most of a panel, when the existing finish has degraded past the point where any match will hold, or when a graphic crosses the repair and has to be reproduced anyway. On coaches with heavy fade, refinishing an entire side often produces a better outcome than blending into a surface that will keep shifting. That is a cost conversation held before spraying rather than after.

## Graphics, Decals and Reproduced Artwork

Most recreational vehicle exteriors carry multi color graphics applied as layered vinyl, painted artwork, or a combination. When a repair crosses one, reproducing it correctly is often harder than the paint work itself. Original vinyl for a discontinued model may not exist. When it does not, the pattern gets scanned or traced from the matching undamaged side, cut, and applied, or the graphic gets masked and sprayed if the original was painted.

Getting the cut lines right is what separates an invisible repair from an obvious one. Vinyl reproduced slightly off in width or radius reads immediately to anyone who looks at the vehicle from the side, even if the colors are perfect. On symmetric designs the undamaged side provides the reference. On asymmetric designs, photographs from before the loss become valuable, which is one more reason arrival documentation gets shot in detail.

## Full Repaints and When They Make Sense

A full repaint is a large project and it is the right call less often than owners assume. It makes sense when the existing finish has failed broadly, when a coach is being repositioned as a custom build, when oxidation has gone past what correction and coating can recover, or when a major collision repair has already involved most of one side. It rarely makes sense purely to change color on a unit whose current finish is sound.

The sequence is long: strip or scuff, repair every surface defect, prime and block the entire body flat, seal, apply base, apply clear, then cut and buff. Blocking a body that size flat is the majority of the labor and the part that determines whether the finish looks like a factory job or a resprayed one. ### Can an RV be painted the same way as a car?

The chemistry overlaps but the execution does not. Panels are far larger, substrates vary across a single vehicle, and the flat surfaces show defects a curved car panel would hide. Adhesion systems have to suit fiberglass, gelcoat and aluminum rather than steel. Booth length is often the practical limit that keeps automotive shops from taking the work at all.

### Why does the new paint not match my RV exactly?

Usually because the existing finish has shifted from sun exposure and no longer matches its own code.
