A high speed impact, a rollover or a jackknife event puts load into a recreational vehicle far beyond what the structure was designed to absorb, and the damage does not stay where the contact happened. It travels along rails, through the floor plane and up into the roof structure, leaving a vehicle that may look repairable from one side and be fundamentally out of shape from above.

These jobs are rebuilds. Entire cap sections come off. Sidewalls get cut back to sound framing and reconstructed stud by stud. Roof structure gets opened to reach bows and the wall to roof joint. It is not unusual for a major job to consume more labor hours in disassembly and structural correction than in the visible reconstruction that follows, which is why they price and schedule so differently from panel work.

## What happens to an RV in a rollover?

A rollover loads the vehicle in a direction it was never engineered for. Recreational vehicle roofs are built to shed water and support a person walking, not to carry the mass of the coach. When a unit goes over, the roof structure collapses toward the opposite sidewall, the wall to roof joint tears along its length, and the sidewall that took the ground contact scrubs down to substrate over a large area.

Underneath that, the chassis often survives better than expected. Truck rails are strong in the plane they are loaded in during normal use, and a roll frequently twists the house without permanently deforming the rails. That is why measurement is non negotiable on these jobs: the assumption that a bad looking house means a bad frame is wrong about as often as it is right, and either error costs the owner money. Anchoring the unit and taking readings takes a few hours and removes the guesswork entirely.

Reconstruction runs from the floor up. The floor plane is established as the datum, wall framing is rebuilt square to it, roof bows are replaced or straightened, and only then does skin go back on. Building the visible surfaces first and hoping the structure lands correctly behind them is how a rebuilt coach ends up with doors that bind in the summer. Skin goes on last for a second reason as well, which is that a closed wall cannot be inspected.

## Sectioning, pulling or replacing: how the call gets made

Three answers exist for deformed structure and the correct one depends on the material and the location. Pulling works where the member is ductile, the deformation is within a recoverable range, and the pull can be applied along the original load axis. Steel ladder frames and heavy C channel rails usually fall here, and a controlled pull with proper anchoring restores dimension without introducing new stress concentrations. Force goes on slowly and comes off between stages so the material is worked rather than shocked.

Sectioning applies where deformation exceeds what a pull can recover but the surrounding structure is sound. The damaged segment gets cut at a location that keeps the joint away from high load areas, a matching section goes in, and the joint is welded and reinforced to a design that carries the same load as the original member. Joint placement is the entire skill here. A technically clean weld in the wrong location is worse than no repair at all.

Replacement is the answer for anything that cannot be verified after correction. High strength steel that has been heated past its tempering range does not return to specification, and adhesive bonded joints on unitized van bodies cannot be un bonded and re bonded reliably in the field. When the manufacturer specifies replacement, that is what happens, and the reasoning goes into the file so the carrier understands why a cheaper repair was declined.

## Rebuilding a slide room opening

A slide opening is a large rectangular hole cut into a structural wall, with the load rerouted around it through headers, jambs and a reinforced sill. Impact anywhere on that wall tends to concentrate at the opening corners, because those corners are the stress transitions. Once an opening racks even a small amount, the room no longer travels straight, the seals compress unevenly, and the drive mechanism starts working against geometry instead of friction.

Correction is measured work, not adjustment. Diagonal dimensions across the opening are compared, the wall is supported and brought back to square, and header and jamb members are repaired or replaced as needed. Only then does the room get reinstalled and set up, because setting up a room in a crooked hole simply relocates the problem to the seals. Shimming a room until it looks centered inside a racked opening is the standard shortcut, and it announces itself a season later as a wiper seal rolling under at one corner.

The verification step is running the room. Full extension, full retraction, several cycles, with seal contact checked along all four edges and drive current or hydraulic pressure observed for asymmetry. A room that pulls harder on one side after repair is telling the shop the opening is still off. The check gets repeated with the coach level and again slightly out of level, because a room that behaves on the jacks and binds on uneven ground is reporting flex in the floor structure rather than in the opening.

A severe hit can total a mid range travel trailer while the identical damage on a premium coach stays well inside the repair envelope. Custom interiors, recent system upgrades and low chassis mileage all move that line in the owner's favor.

A carefully documented teardown estimate is what makes that determination accurate rather than arbitrary. Undercounting hidden damage produces a repair authorization that turns into supplement after supplement. Overcounting produces an unnecessary total loss on a vehicle the owner wanted to keep. Both outcomes come from the same root cause, which is quoting a severe loss without opening it up first. A teardown estimate costs a small fraction of either mistake and produces the one document both sides can argue from honestly.

When a unit is declared a total loss and the owner elects to retain it, rebuilding is still possible and the shop can quote that work directly. Those jobs move into the restoration category, where the sequence is planned as a rebuild program rather than a claim repair. Retention makes the most sense on coaches with a discontinued floor plan, a heavily customized interior, or a low mileage chassis under a badly damaged house. ### My motorhome rolled. Is it even repairable?

Frequently yes, and more often than owners expect. Rollovers destroy the house while leaving the chassis rails within specification, because rails are strong in the plane they normally carry load. Whether repair makes sense financially is a separate question from whether it is technically possible. Both answers require a documented teardown and a measurement sheet, not a photograph.

### How do you know the frame is actually straight when you are done?

By measuring it, then measuring it again. Reference points are taken against published control dimensions before correction, during correction and after correction.
