Custom color matching is the laboratory side of refinishing: reading an existing finish with a spectrophotometer, selecting or hand tinting a formula from variant decks, then proving the result on spray-out cards and letdown panels before any material reaches the vehicle. Paint codes are a starting point and nothing more. A single factory code may have shipped in six or eight production variants, and after several years of ultraviolet exposure the panel in front of you no longer matches any of them. Matching therefore begins with measurement of the actual surface rather than with a lookup, and it ends with a physical comparison in daylight rather than with confidence in a number on a screen.

A spectrophotometer fires light at the finish from several angles and returns reflectance data, which the formulation software compares against variant libraries. Multi-angle reading matters because metallic and pearl colors change appearance as the viewing angle moves. A formula that matches head-on and fails at forty five degrees is a formula that will make a repaired corner glow when the coach turns into the sun.

From there the work is manual. The candidate formula is mixed, sprayed on a card, dried or force-dried, and held against the cleaned panel outside. If it is off, the painter tints, sprays another card, and compares again. Documentation of the final mix goes onto the repair order so the same color can be reproduced months later if another panel needs attention.

## Why the paint code alone almost never matches

Manufacturing variance is the first reason. Coach builders source paint in batches across long production runs, and small differences in pigment lots, spray conditions and film build leave measurable differences between units that carry the identical code. Refinish manufacturers respond by publishing variant decks, which are physical chips showing the recognized spread within a code. A single silver may carry a dozen chips separated by nothing more than flake coarseness and a slight shift toward green or blue. Selecting the correct chip is a visual and instrumental exercise, not a guess.

Aging is the second reason, and in Southern California it is the larger one. Ultraviolet exposure breaks down certain pigments faster than others. Reds and some organic yellows shift noticeably. Whites yellow or, on some formulations, go slightly gray. A coach that has been parked with one flank facing afternoon sun will read differently side to side, which is why a reading is taken on the panel adjacent to the repair rather than on some convenient spot elsewhere on the vehicle.

Surface condition is the third. Oxidation and embedded contamination scatter light and make a finish read duller and lighter than the paint underneath actually is. Before any measurement, the reading area is washed, decontaminated and lightly polished so the instrument sees the coating rather than the grime on it. A clay treatment and an iron remover come first, then a light finishing polish, since a cutting compound would remove enough clear to change the read on its own. Measuring a dirty panel produces a formula that matches the dirt.

## What does a spray-out card actually prove?

A spray-out card is a small painted panel produced with the same gun, the same pressure, the same number of coats and the same reducer that will be used on the vehicle. That last detail is what makes it meaningful. Application variables change color: more coats deepen a metallic, a slower reducer lets flake settle and darkens the appearance, higher pressure stands flake up and lightens it. A card sprayed casually with different settings proves very little.

The card is then cleared, because clear shifts color. Most basecoats look flatter and slightly lighter before clear goes on, and comparing an uncleared card to a cleared vehicle is a reliable way to reject a formula that would actually have been correct. Once cleared and dried, the card is held directly against the cleaned panel, viewed straight on and then at a shallow angle, in shade and in direct sun.

For metallics and pearls, a letdown panel takes the process further. The painter sprays a graduated series showing the color at increasing numbers of mid-coat passes, from very few to full coverage. Holding that stepped panel against the vehicle identifies exactly how many passes reproduce the existing appearance, which is the only practical way to hit a three-stage pearl consistently. Each step on the panel is labeled with its pass count before clear goes on, because once the whole card is glossed over, the steps become very difficult to tell apart by eye.

## Hand tinting and multi-stage colors

When the closest variant is still not right, the formula is adjusted by hand. Tinting is done in small measured increments against a scale, one toner at a time, with a card sprayed after each change. Adding two toners at once and liking the result is a trap, because the next batch cannot be reproduced. Every addition is logged by weight so the final mix exists as a written formula rather than as a memory.

Three-stage and tri-coat pearls demand more discipline than solids ever will. The ground coat sets the depth, the mid-coat pearl controls both color and lightness, and the clear sets the final read. Because the mid-coat is semi-transparent, appearance keeps changing with each pass, so the painter is effectively matching a process rather than a mixture. Gun distance and overlap matter as much as pass count, since a mid-coat laid at fifty percent overlap builds faster than the same material at thirty. This is where the letdown panel earns its keep.

Candy and color-shift finishes push further still. Perceived color varies with viewing angle, ground shade and total film build, and a repair that is one pass light will read as a different color in the parking lot. On these vehicles the honest recommendation is often to refinish an entire bounded surface so the appearance is uniform within a break line, rather than to attempt an invisible partial match. Candy is transparent, so the silver or gold ground beneath it is doing half the work, and reproducing that ground is a separate matching exercise.

## How is the final match verified before spraying the coach?

Light source is controlled deliberately. Two colors can appear identical under shop fluorescents and clearly different in sunlight, an effect called metamerism, and it is the reason final approval always happens outside or under a corrected daylight lamp. The comparison is done with the card touching the panel, since even a small gap lets the eye average the difference away. Overcast daylight is better than direct sun for the first look, because harsh light flattens subtle differences, and a second look in full sun then confirms how the flake behaves.

Angle is checked as carefully as color. The card is rotated through face, flop and shallow viewing positions. On a large vehicle this matters more than on a car, because a sidewall presents such a wide sweep that a single observer sees several angles of the same surface at once. A formula that is correct on the face and dark on the flop will make the middle of the flank look like a different panel.

Approval is recorded. The accepted formula, the variant selected, the number of coats, the reducer used and the letdown count for any mid-coat are written into the file with the card retained. Gun setup goes into the record too: tip size, inlet pressure and fan width, since a formula sprayed through a different tip can land visibly off even when the mix is identical. If the coach returns later for a different area, that record removes most of the guesswork and shortens the next visit considerably.

## Sequence of operations

### 01. Clean and read the surface

The measurement area is washed, chemically decontaminated and lightly polished so the instrument sees actual coating. Multiple spectrophotometer readings are taken on the panel closest to the repair, and on a second panel for comparison, to capture any side to side fade.

### 02. Pull candidates and mix

Software returns ranked formulas from the variant library. The closest one or two candidates are mixed by weight on a calibrated scale, using the same reducer and hardener intended for the vehicle so the card behaves like the finished panel will.

### 03. Spray out, clear and compare

Cards are sprayed with production settings, cleared and dried, then held against the cleaned panel in daylight at several angles. If a correction is needed, one toner is adjusted at a time and a new card is sprayed until the match holds through face and flop.

### 04. Letdown, approve and record

For pearls and tri-coats a letdown panel establishes the exact mid-coat pass count. The approved formula, variant, coat count, reducer, gun tip size and inlet pressure are written into the file, and the sprayed card is kept with the vehicle record so any future work starts from proven settings.

## Frequently asked questions

### My RV has no paint code anywhere. Can you still match it?

Yes. Many coaches, especially custom builds, bus conversions and older units, carry no usable code at all. Matching then works entirely from the surface: the instrument reads the panel, the software proposes formulas from its libraries based on the reflectance data rather than on a code, and the painter tints from there. The spray-out and letdown steps are identical, so the result does not depend on paperwork existing.

### Why did the last shop match the code and still get it wrong?

Matching to a code ignores two variables that dominate the outcome. It ignores production variants, so it may pull the wrong version of that code entirely, and it ignores fading, so it delivers the color the coach had when it was new rather than the color it has now. Both problems produce a panel that is technically correct and visibly wrong.

### Does the number of coats really change the color?

On metallics and pearls, significantly. Each additional pass adds flake or pearl particles that change how much light reflects back and at what angle. A metallic sprayed in two coats reads lighter than the same material in four. That is why the spray-out card is produced with the exact coat count planned for the vehicle, and why the count is recorded on the repair order.

### Can you match a color I saw on another vehicle?

Usually. Bring a physical sample if you can, such as a fuel door, a mirror cap or even a good sized painted part. A photograph is not enough because cameras and screens shift color badly. With a real sample the instrument can read it directly and a formula can be built to reproduce it, then proven on a card exactly the same way a repair match would be.

### How much of the color matching cost is labor versus material?

Most of it is labor and shop time. Toner volume for a match exercise is small; the hours go into cleaning and polishing the read area, taking readings, mixing candidates, spraying and clearing cards, drying them, comparing in daylight and iterating. Complex pearls take more iterations than solids, which is the main reason a tri-coat match sits higher in the range than a single stage white.
