Where a coach-capable shop and a car-focused collision shop genuinely differ, and when the car shop is the correct answer.
The honest starting point is that these two businesses solve different problems. A general collision shop exists to return a unibody passenger vehicle to published dimensional specification, and it is very good at that. The estimating databases, the fixture benches, the booth dimensions and the parts channels all assume a vehicle under twenty feet long with a factory paint code and a known crush structure.
A recreational vehicle or a commercial body breaks most of those assumptions at once. The wall is a bonded sandwich, not a stamping. The chassis is a ladder frame with outriggers. There is plumbing, propane, a house battery bank and a slide mechanism inside the area that got hit. Length regularly exceeds forty feet and height regularly exceeds twelve.
None of that makes one shop better than the other. It makes them differently equipped. The table below is written to help you decide which door to knock on rather than to argue that there is only one door.
Verdict
Match the shop to the structure, not to the logo on the paperwork. If the damaged object is a stamped panel on a passenger vehicle, a good general collision shop will do it faster and for less money. If the damaged object is bonded laminate, a molded cap, a slide opening or anything over about twenty six feet, the specialty floor is the only place the job finishes correctly the first time.

In shop repair or a technician who travels to you
What a traveling technician can genuinely accomplish, what needs a controlled building, and how to tell the two apart.
Mobile RV technicians serve a real need. A failed water pump, a dead converter, a torn awning fabric or a stuck step motor can be handled in a storage lot in an afternoon, and hauling a coach across two counties for that work makes no sense.
OCRV Center performs all work in shop at the Yorba Linda facility and does not offer mobile, roadside or on-site service. That is a deliberate limit rather than an oversight. Structural pulling, refinish, lamination and water testing require equipment, containment and cure conditions that cannot be carried in a van.
The comparison below is meant to save you a wasted appointment in either direction. There is a clear line between the two categories of work, and most owners can locate their own problem on it within a minute.
Verdict
If the fix is a part swap and the vehicle stays functional, that is work for a technician who travels, not for this shop, and you keep your Saturday. If the repair involves structure, laminate, paint, a roof, a slide mechanism or water that has already traveled somewhere, the work belongs in a building. Independent repair shop or dealer service department
How scheduling, parts access, labor structure and factory coverage differ between an independent body shop and a selling dealer.
Owners who bought a coach from a dealership often assume repairs have to return there. Sometimes that is correct, and this comparison is written to identify those cases rather than to talk anyone out of them.
A dealer service department is organized around the units it sells. It has direct claim channels with the builder, factory technical bulletins, and parts ordering privileges that an independent shop reaches more slowly. During the factory coverage period those advantages are substantial.
An independent body shop is organized around damage rather than around a brand. It accepts any make, it does structural and refinish work that most dealer service lanes do not attempt, and it schedules against its own bay capacity instead of behind a sales delivery queue.
Verdict
Coverage status decides most of this. If the failure is a defect on a unit still inside the builder's service commitment, start at the selling dealer and let them file it. If the vehicle was damaged, if the builder no longer supports the part, or if the work involves structure, laminate or paint, an independent shop with a body floor is the faster and usually cheaper path.

Repairing a roof or replacing the membrane
How to judge whether a leaking roof needs a targeted repair, a full membrane replacement, or deck work underneath both.
Roof decisions get made badly because the failure is almost never where the water shows up inside. A stain above the dinette can originate at a marker light eight feet forward, travel along a rafter and drop at the first low point.
The real question is not membrane versus repair. It is whether the deck under the membrane is still sound. A perfect new membrane laid over wet, delaminated decking will look excellent and fail again, and the second failure costs more than the first because the rot had another year to spread.
Repair sits in a 4 to 20 hour band and replacement in a 20 to 80 hour band, and the gap between those two numbers is why an honest inspection matters more than a quick quote.
Verdict
Repair when the failure is local, recent and the surrounding deck reads dry on a meter. Replace when the membrane has chalked through, when three or more penetrations are lifting, or when any probing finds a soft spot. Spending $2,000 twice on a roof that needed replacing once is the most common expensive mistake in this category, and it is avoidable with an hour of honest inspection.

Filing an insurance claim or paying out of pocket
The arithmetic and the second order effects that decide whether a claim is worth opening on a given repair.
This decision is usually presented as a simple deductible comparison, and that framing is incomplete. The deductible matters, but so do supplement potential, total loss exposure, rate consequences and how much of the damage is actually a covered peril.
A repair estimated at $3,000 against a $1,000 deductible looks like an easy claim until teardown finds another $9,000 of structure. Conversely, a $2,200 repair against a $2,000 deductible is almost never worth the file.
Nothing here is insurance advice, and coverage questions belong with your own carrier or your own counsel. What follows is how the two paths behave in practice on a body shop floor.
Verdict
Open a claim when the visible damage already clears the deductible by a comfortable margin, and especially when the impact area contains laminate, structure or a slide opening where teardown routinely triples the number. Pay out of pocket when the scope is small, bounded and unlikely to grow, or when the unit is old enough that a carrier total loss valuation would be worse than a repair bill.

Full repaint or spot refinish
Blend fields, panel boundaries, fade differential and cost bands that decide how much of a coach actually needs to be sprayed.
Refinish scope is where estimates diverge most sharply between shops, and the reason is usually blend. A quote that covers only the damaged panel is cheaper because it omits the work that makes the repair invisible.
A spot refinish sits in a 4 to 25 hour band. A full exterior repaint sits in a 40 to 250 hour band. Between those two extremes is a large middle ground of sectional refinish that most owners never hear offered.
The deciding variables are how far the existing finish has drifted from its original color, how the panel boundaries fall on that particular body, and whether graphics cross the repair area.
Verdict
Spot refinish with a properly planned blend is correct for most single incident damage, and any estimate that omits blend hours is quietly setting up a visible repair. Move to a full repaint when the existing finish has failed on its own, when damage spans three or more panels, when graphics must be redesigned anyway, or when the owner intends to keep the coach long enough for uniform aging to pay off.

Repairing a fiberglass panel or replacing it
Damage depth, core condition, panel geometry and part availability decide whether a laminate repair beats a new panel.
Fiberglass is unusual among body materials because it can genuinely be rebuilt. A steel quarter panel that has been torn is replaced. A laminated sidewall that has been torn can be scarfed, reinforced and made structurally equivalent to what it was.
That flexibility creates the decision. Repair keeps original geometry and avoids parts lead time. Replacement removes all doubt about the substrate but requires a panel that may not exist any more, especially on a molded front or rear cap for a discontinued model.
Compound curvature is the quiet variable. A flat sidewall section repairs beautifully. A double curved cap corner with a molded radius is very difficult to rebuild to a finish that survives raking light.
Verdict
Repair is the default on flat and single curved laminate where the core boundary can be found and cut back to sound material. Replacement earns its cost when the damage crosses a molded radius, when core crush is widespread, or when the panel has been repaired before and the previous boundary was never established. Availability often decides it before technique does.

Lithium or AGM for a house battery upgrade
Usable capacity, charge acceptance, weight, temperature behavior and installed cost compared for a coach or van house bank.
The lithium versus AGM argument is usually conducted in nominal amp hours, which is the least useful number in the comparison. What matters is usable energy, how fast the bank will accept a charge, and what else in the electrical system has to change to support it.
A 200 amp hour AGM bank delivers roughly 100 usable amp hours if you respect depth of discharge. A 200 amp hour LiFePO4 bank delivers roughly 180. That is the headline, and it is real, but the installed cost difference is not only the battery price.
Charge sources, fusing, the converter profile, the alternator path and sometimes the inverter all need review. This comparison covers the whole install rather than the shelf price of a box.
Verdict
Choose AGM when the coach spends most nights on shore power, when the budget is tight, and when nothing in the build draws hard between charges. Choose LiFePO4 when you camp off grid, when payload is constrained, or when you want solar and alternator input to actually land in the bank instead of trickling. Budget for the supporting components either way; the battery alone is not the project.
