Stage Two: What Teardown Exposes
This is the set that changes estimates. When a fiberglass cap comes off, the framing behind it becomes visible for the first time since the vehicle was assembled. When a laminated sidewall gets separated, the condition of the luan substrate, the foam block core and the aluminum or steel studs becomes a matter of record. Photographs at this stage frequently show damage extending well beyond the visible impact, and they are what justifies a supplement to a carrier who has only ever seen the outside.
Teardown images get shot with a scale reference in frame wherever the dimension matters, and with surrounding intact structure included so the location is unambiguous. A close up of a snapped stud proves the stud is snapped. A wider frame proves which stud and where. Both are necessary. On water intrusion jobs a moisture meter reading is photographed alongside the probe location, since a number without a location is not evidence of anything.
Stage Three: Structural and Substrate Work
Repairs that live under the finished surface deserve the most documentation because nobody will ever see them again. Replaced framing members, welded joints, new backing plates, laminate layups with the ply schedule visible, reinstalled or rerouted wiring, and fresh sealant beads at seams all get captured before they are covered. This is the portion of a repair where quality varies most between shops and where the difference is completely undetectable in a finished photograph.
On collision work the structural set also includes measurement documentation. Frame and subframe corrections get recorded against reference points, and the before and after figures sit in the file alongside the images. An owner comparing two shops has essentially no way to evaluate structural quality without this material, which is a good reason to ask any facility whether it exists before authorizing the work.

Stage Four: Primer, Sealer and Refinish
Body work quality is easiest to judge in primer, not in color. Guide coat sanding shows every low spot and every ripple that color and clear will later disguise under gloss. A panel photographed in uniform primer with clean feather edges and no visible filler shadow is a panel that was worked correctly. The same panel photographed only after clear looks acceptable either way for about a year, and then the repair edge starts to telegraph through.
Refinish documentation covers masking, the sealer stage, base coverage and the final clear. On blend work the adjacent panels get photographed so the extent of the blend is on record, which matters when a carrier questions why three panels were refinished to repair one. Color match verification appears here too, with the spray out card photographed against the existing finish under the same lighting used to evaluate it.
How to Read a Before and After Set Anywhere
Most published repair photography is chosen to flatter. A finished shot taken at a low angle in soft light hides more than it shows. The useful questions are simple. Is the after image taken from the same position and distance as the before image? Is there a straight on shot in raking light where waves in a large flat panel would be obvious? Is the repair area shown alongside an untouched panel so color and texture can be compared directly?
On recreational vehicles specifically, look at how the repair meets a body line, how the sealant bead at a seam is finished, whether compartment doors sit flush and even in their openings, and whether decals or graphics were reproduced with correct cut lines rather than approximated. Those four details separate a competent recreational vehicle refinish from an automotive shop attempting one at scale. Any owner can check them in a photograph once they know to look.
