The short answer
Four fender-to-ground measurements, taken twice, describe how a rig will behave before you ever move it. Record ground to fender lip at the tow vehicle front wheel, the tow vehicle rear wheel, the trailer front wheel and the trailer rear wheel with nothing coupled. Couple, raise the jack, and record the same four points. A rear that sinks while the front lifts is squat. A trailer that ends up nose down is a ball height error. Both are hardware problems, not driving problems.
Taking the four numbers so they actually mean something
The measurement is worthless if the conditions change between the two sets. Do it this way:
- Park on the flattest surface you have. A crowned driveway or a gravel pad will bias one side by half an inch and you will chase that ghost for months.
- Set every tire on both vehicles to the pressure listed on the sidewall placard or the trailer tag. ST tires sitting at 55 psi instead of 80 psi will read as a suspension problem that does not exist.
- Pick a repeatable point. The center of the wheel arch, directly above the hub, marked with a chalk stick so you return to the same spot. Not the running board, not the flare edge.
- Uncoupled: trailer on the jack and sitting level, tow vehicle parked with its normal load in it. Write down all four numbers.
- Coupled: drop the coupler onto the ball, latch it, run the jack all the way up, and let the suspension settle. Roll forward ten feet and back to unbind the springs. Write down all four numbers again.
Now subtract. Front of the tow vehicle usually rises. Rear drops. Trailer front and rear tell you whether the box is sitting level or pitched.
How much rear squat is too much?
A pickup with a conventional receiver will always give up something at the rear. A half inch is normal and nobody notices it. An inch and a half is where steering feel starts to change, because the front axle is carrying less than it was designed to carry and the caster geometry has rotated backward. Two inches or more and you are driving a vehicle with light steering, a long delay between input and response, and a rear suspension already close to its bump stops before you hit the first expansion joint.
The front number matters more than the rear number, and most people never take it. If the front fender rose three quarters of an inch when you coupled, that is weight that left the front axle. It did not evaporate. It moved behind the rear axle and levered the nose up.
Why the headlights tell on you before the steering does
Headlight aim is a pitch angle, and it multiplies with distance. Tilt the body of a truck back by a degree and the cutoff line climbs several feet by the time it reaches the car ahead of you. If oncoming drivers start flashing you on the run down SR-71 at night and they never did before, that is not a bulb problem. That is your rise and sag numbers telling you the front end came up.
The same pitch change moves your low beam pattern short in front of the truck, so you see less pavement, and at the same time it throws glare into mirrors. Fixing hitch geometry fixes the aim. Re-aiming the lamps to compensate for a bad hitch setup just hides the real fault and leaves the lamps wrong when you unhook.
Choosing a drop shank without guessing
Ball height is a subtraction problem, not a shopping problem. Measure from the ground to the underside of the coupler with the trailer sitting dead level on its jack. Then measure from the ground to the top of your receiver opening with the tow vehicle loaded the way you actually tow it. The difference is the drop you need, measured to the top of the ball mount platform, and then you subtract the platform thickness to land on the correct hole.
Shanks come in fixed drops, usually in one inch or two inch steps, and adjustable shanks come in half inch or one inch hole spacing. Aim for a trailer that finishes level or slightly nose high once coupled, never nose low. Most shanks flip, so a four inch drop becomes a four inch rise for a lower trailer behind a taller truck. Check the stamped rating in both orientations, because the rise position is frequently rated lower than the drop position.
What a nose down trailer does to a tandem
On a tandem axle trailer the equalizer between the two springs is supposed to split load evenly. Pitch the box nose down and the geometry stops cooperating. The front axle takes the larger share, the equalizer sits at an angle it was never meant to hold, and the front hanger bolts and shackle bushings wear out of round on one side of the trailer before the other.
That is a suspension story with a body shop ending. Once the front axle carries more than its share, the frame flexes more over every dip, and the flex telegraphs into the sidewall lamination and the front cap corners. We see hairline cracks stepping up from the lower front radius and soft spots along the front wall where the skin has separated from the block foam core. At that point you are not adjusting a shank, you are into delamination repair and sometimes a look at whether the frame rails themselves have taken a set. A chassis and alignment inspection sorts a bent rail from a tired spring pack, and they feel identical from the driver seat.
A nose high trailer has its own cost, mostly reduced tongue weight and a lighter feel that turns into wandering, but nose down is the one that eats hardware. If you tow a conventional travel trailer with a tandem under it, the level check is the single cheapest maintenance item you own.
Numbers you can take yourself with a tape and a chalk stick
None of this needs a shop. A tape measure, chalk, and a notepad get you the whole picture in twenty minutes. Take the eight numbers, write the date next to them, and take them again after you fill the fresh water tank, because a full tank ahead of the axles will change the trailer front number and nothing else.
Owners in Eastvale who tow a few weekends a season should keep those numbers taped inside a cabinet door. When something changes, and it will, you have a baseline instead of a guess. If the coupled numbers drift from one trip to the next with no change in how you load, the suspension or the frame is moving, and that is worth a set of trained eyes.
