The front of a travel trailer takes constant punishment. Towed behind a truck, the cap sits directly in the path of everything the tow vehicle tires throw, and on Inland Empire freeways that means gravel, tire carcass fragments and road debris. Rock guards help but they also trap grit against the cap, which sandblasts the gelcoat over time. Chalky, pitted front caps with stone chips through to the laminate are routine arrivals.
Behind the cap, construction determines the repair. Laminated trailers use a fiberglass or Filon skin bonded over lauan or Azdel with aluminum tube framing between. Stick built trailers use corrugated aluminum screwed to wood studs. Laminated walls fail by separating from the substrate and bubbling. Stick built walls fail by rotting at the stud where a screw penetration leaked. Nothing about the outside tells you which it is until you know what to look for.

Roof membrane work, done properly
Most travel trailers use a single ply membrane, either EPDM rubber or a TPO type material, laid over plywood or lauan decking and held at the perimeter by an aluminum termination rail bedded in sealant. Sun degrades the top surface, the sealant at the rail shrinks, and every roof penetration for the vent, the antenna and the cooling unit becomes a candidate leak. Owners keep adding sealant on top of old sealant, which hides the failure without stopping it.
A correct roof job strips the old membrane, removes every penetration component, and inspects the decking with the surface exposed. Soft decking gets cut out and replaced. Rafters get checked where the decking was wet. New membrane goes down with the correct adhesive for the substrate, the termination rails are rebedded with fresh butyl and new fasteners, and each penetration is bedded rather than surface caulked. That sequence is what separates a decade of service from another season of chasing drips.

Sidewalls, front caps and the entry door corner
Delamination in a laminated sidewall shows as a bubble or a hollow sound and it usually starts at a penetration. Window frames, the entry door, the awning rail and the exterior receptacle are all holes in the skin sealed with butyl tape that hardened years ago. Once water gets between skin and substrate, the adhesive lets go and the void spreads with every heat cycle. Mapping the void by tapping and pressing establishes the repair area before anything is opened.
The entry door corner deserves its own attention. A trailer door opening is a big hole in a structural wall, and the corner below the latch side takes load every time someone steps in. On a unit with any floor softness, that corner drops slightly, the door stops latching cleanly, and the owner adjusts the striker instead of fixing the wall. Repair addresses the floor edge and wall framing so the opening returns to square, then the door and striker get set.
Frame, axles and what happens underneath
The A frame tongue carries the coupler, the jack, the battery box and often two propane bottles, and it is welded to the main rails at a joint that sees fatigue loading every tow. Cracks at that weld, at the safety chain loops and at the jack mount are common on older trailers and on any unit that has been towed loaded to its limit. Repair grinds the crack out, re welds with correct preparation and adds reinforcement where the original design was marginal.
Axles and suspension are the other underside issue. Leaf spring hangers wear oval at the bolt hole, equalizers wear, and shackle bolts elongate until the axles are no longer parallel, which shows as uneven tire wear and a trailer that tracks off center. Torsion axles have no serviceable suspension but the rubber cords sag with age, dropping ride height and reducing clearance. Both conditions are assessed with the trailer level and the weight supported correctly.
