Run a Full Shakedown Two Weeks Before the First Trip of the Season

Short answer

Set the coach up in your driveway as if you were camping, two weekends before departure. Cycle every slide twice, run the awning out and back, open every compartment, walk the roof, and torque the wheels. Leave it standing overnight. The lead time exists so repairs can actually happen.

The short answer

Two weeks of lead time is the whole point of a shakedown. Anything you find on a Saturday in the driveway has to be diagnosed, parted and repaired before you tow, and that takes calendar days, not hours. Run the unit through a full camping cycle at home: slides, awning, compartment doors, roof, wheels, step, and leveling under load. Then leave it deployed overnight and look at it again with fresh eyes in the morning.

Why two weeks and not two days

A shakedown the night before you leave only tells you what is broken. It gives you no way to act on it. Two weeks is roughly the window in which a slide bulb seal can be ordered and fitted, a compartment door can be re-hung square, a soft roof section can be opened and rebuilt, or a cap seam can be ground out, laid up and refinished with honest cure time between steps.

Availability drives that math more than labor does. Common bulb profiles sit on a shelf. A specific arm casting or a lead rail for a floorplan a decade old may take a week to land. Sealants want time too. A non sag bead in a vertical seam skins over in a couple of hours but does not reach full strength for days, and you do not want to pull a fresh bead out of the driveway the next morning.

Setting up in the driveway as if you were camping

Give it a Saturday and work in order.

  1. Level the coach the way you would at a site, on jacks or blocks under the tires, not eyeballed.
  2. Run each slide all the way out. Stand outside and watch the bulb seal meet the sidewall as the room lands. It should compress evenly top to bottom.
  3. Bring each slide back in. Then do both again. The second cycle is the honest one.
  4. Extend the awning fully. Watch both arms through the whole travel, and look at the elbow pivots and the stitching along the bottom hem of the fabric.
  5. Retract the awning and check that the lead rail seats flat against the cover.
  6. Open every compartment door, top and bottom. Close each one and look at how the gasket squashes against the frame.
  7. Deploy and retract the Kwikee step several times. Listen for the motor loading up and check the linkage for slop.
  8. Walk the roof. All of it, in soft shoes, feeling for anything that moves under your weight.
  9. Set every tire to the pressure on the sidewall or the tag, cold, and torque every lug to the manufacturer figure in the proper pattern.
  10. Load the coach the way you actually travel, water and gear and the heavy bin included, then re-level with that weight in it.

What a slide tells you on the second cycle

The first extension of the season is misleading because everything is stiff. The second one is where problems show. A room that hesitates halfway out, or that walks out an inch further on one side before catching up, is describing a rail, a gear or a synchronization fault rather than a seal. On a Schwintek in wall system that stagger usually means one column of teeth is loading differently than the other. On a Lippert rack and pinion under the floor it is more often a rack that has collected debris or a room that has settled out of square.

Seals fail on their own schedule. A bulb that has spent five months folded against the sidewall takes a set, and when it comes back out it stays flattened on one face instead of returning round. From inside, with the room out, you can see daylight under it. That is not a leak yet. It becomes one the first time you park nose down in weather. Catching it now puts slide seal replacement on the calendar instead of interior work later.

The awning, the doors, and the roof walk

Awning arms carry spring tension whether the fabric is out or in, so an arm that took a gust last season and got straightened by hand will look fine closed and bind at the elbow open. Run it out and watch the geometry. If one arm reaches full height before the other, the roller tube is loading diagonally, the fabric tracks crooked and the hem wears. A stretched stitch line is a small repair now and a torn panel in midsummer, which is why awning work fills the bench in the weeks before spring travel.

Compartment doors are simple and get skipped. A door that no longer latches square has usually moved because the frame around it moved, not because the latch wore out. Press the gasket at each corner with the door shut and look for a corner that never makes contact. That gap is the way in for dust and water.

Then the roof. Walk it slowly. A soft spot underfoot near a vent flange or along a seam is structure, not surface, and it is the most valuable thing a driveway shakedown finds. If you feel one, stop stepping on it and book roof repair before the trip rather than after.

What the morning look catches that the noon look missed

Leave the whole thing deployed overnight. Two things change by daylight.

The first is temperature. Panels contract overnight, sealant beads pull, and a hairline in a front cap seam that was invisible under flat midday light shows as a dark line when low sun rakes across it. Walk the exterior at first light with the sun behind you, then again with the sun in front of you. Reflected light finds cracks that direct light hides.

The second is load. A slide left out all night will droop if the support rollers are worn, and the gap along the top seal opens at the outboard corner. An awning left out in a light breeze shows you which arm is not holding. Neither of those appears in a two minute cycle test.

Look underneath while you are there. A drip mark on dry concrete under a coach means something above it is not sealed.

Which of these you can finish yourself

Plenty of this list is owner work. Torquing lugs, setting pressures, cleaning and conditioning a bulb seal, moving a latch striker a sixteenth of an inch, snugging an awning rail screw that has backed out a turn. Those are hand tool jobs and you should do them.

The line is structure. Anything that moves when it should not, anything soft underfoot, any crack that runs rather than stops, and any slide that will not repeat the same motion twice belongs in a shop with the room supported and the fasteners reachable. Guessing at a rail or a gear with the room half out is how a two hour job becomes a week.

If the rig lives at a lot off Schleisman Road and you only reach it on weekends, schedule the shakedown for the first weekend of the month and keep the second one open. Owners hauling in from Eastvale or coming down through Chino Hills usually find one item that needs a bench and three they can knock out in the driveway.
