Nothing on a municipal fleet corrodes faster than a refuse body. Leachate collecting in the hopper is aggressive, it stays in contact with the steel, and it works into every seam and weld. Combine that with continuous abrasion from the packing cycle and the result is a body that loses material from two mechanisms at once, from the inside, where nobody looks until something fails.

The mechanical side is equally demanding. A packer blade sweeps the hopper thousands of times a week on rails or in tracks that fill with debris. Cylinders apply high forces through mounting points welded to the body. Tailgates carry the whole rear structure and seal against a body that is constantly flexing. Every one of those interfaces is a wear point with a predictable life.

Municipal operations and hauling contractors working the Eastvale and Jurupa Valley area bring bodies roughly twenty miles to the Yorba Linda facility, and everything happens in shop where the body can be washed out, dried and welded safely. Scope is body, paint, structural repair, fabrication and equipment mounting. Engine, transmission, drivetrain and hydraulic component overhaul are not performed here. Bodies are washed out and dried before any inspection begins.

Internal corrosion and floor plate loss

Assessment on a refuse body starts with cleaning. A hopper full of residue cannot be inspected, and welding into contaminated steel produces poor results and real hazards. Once the body is clean and dry, thickness readings across the floor, the lower sidewalls and the hopper show where material has gone. Loss is rarely uniform: it concentrates in the packing path and wherever liquid pools when the truck sits on a slope.

Repair replaces plate rather than patching over thin material. Sections are cut back to sound steel, new plate is fitted with full penetration welds where the original design called for them, and the internal corners are detailed so liquid drains rather than collecting. Where an operation consistently wears the same area, an abrasion resistant liner in that zone slows the next cycle of loss considerably. Liner thickness gets chosen against the material the route actually carries rather than a default specification.

Packer mechanism, tracks and cylinder mounting

The packer blade rides in tracks or on rails, and debris finds its way into both. Worn track sections, damaged wear shoes and a blade that has gone out of square all produce the same complaint: a packing cycle that binds, stalls or makes noise. Repair rebuilds the track sections with new material, replaces wear components and checks the blade for squareness before anything is reassembled. Debris paths and wear shoe clearances get set so the track does not immediately pack again.

Cylinder mounting is the higher consequence item. Packing cylinders apply large forces through brackets welded to the body, and those brackets crack. Repair is a proper structural weld repair: the crack is cleaned and drilled at the tip, the weld is ground out and rebuilt with correct preparation, and reinforcement is designed in where the original bracket was marginal. Mounting geometry gets verified so the cylinder is not working at an angle.

Tailgate, seals and exterior body

The tailgate carries the rear structure, hinges at the top and seals against the body all the way around. Hinge bores go oval, the gate hangs unevenly, and the seal loses contact along the bottom, which is exactly where leachate wants to escape. Repair rebuilds the hinge points to correct fit, straightens the gate frame, replaces the seal and adjusts the latching so contact is continuous around the perimeter. Leachate escaping at the bottom edge is the symptom that matters most.

Exterior work is a mix of collision damage and corrosion. Backing incidents damage the rear corners and the tailgate structure. Curb and bin contact damages the side panels and the lift arm area. Corrosion perforates the lower body from the inside outward. Repair addresses all three, then refinishing goes on with a preparation and coating system chosen for a vehicle that is washed daily and exposed to aggressive material continuously.

01How is a refuse body assessed when the corrosion is inside?
The body gets cleaned and dried first, because nothing useful can be judged through residue and nothing can be welded safely into contaminated steel. Then thickness readings are taken across the floor, the lower sidewalls and the hopper on a grid. That produces a map of where material has been lost and how much, which is what a replacement decision needs.
02Can thin floor plate be plated over instead of replaced?
Plating over thin steel traps residue between the layers and accelerates corrosion in the gap, so it is a short term measure at best. Replacing the section back to sound steel, with the welds and the internal corner details done properly, gives a body that keeps working. Abrasion resistant liner in the packing path is the sensible addition once the plate is sound.
03Why does my tailgate leak along the bottom?
Usually because the gate has dropped at the hinges. Worn or oval hinge bores let the gate hang slightly low and slightly out of plane, so the latch pulls the top tight and the bottom stands off. Replacing the seal alone does not correct it. The hinge points get rebuilt to a common axis and the gate frame gets straightened before a new seal goes on.
04Do you repair hydraulic components?
Mounting brackets, structural attachment points and body work associated with hydraulic equipment are in scope, as is the fabrication needed to correct a marginal mounting design. Overhaul of cylinders, pumps and valves is handled by a hydraulics specialist. Engine, transmission and drivetrain service is not performed at this facility either, and the estimate states that boundary.
