Clear fails from the top down. Ultraviolet radiation attacks the absorber package in the coating first, and once those absorbers are consumed the resin itself begins to break down. The visible sequence is predictable: gloss dies, the surface turns milky, fine crazing appears, then the film loses adhesion to the basecoat and starts lifting at an edge. By the time an owner sees flaking, the chemistry failed years earlier.

Horizontal and sun facing surfaces go first. On a coach the roof cove, the top of the front cap, the upper third of the driver side flank in a vehicle parked facing one direction, and the tops of slide-out boxes are the usual casualties. Vertical surfaces below the rub rail often remain sound on the same vehicle, which is why restoration is scoped by area rather than applied to everything by default.

The central question is never whether the clear is bad. It is whether the basecoat underneath is still intact. Removing failed clear and finding healthy color means the job is a re-clear. Removing failed clear and finding chalked, powdery or eroded pigment means basecoat must be replaced too, which roughly doubles the work on that surface. Answering the question honestly requires sanding a test area before pricing anything.

How do you tell failed clear from dirty or oxidized paint?

A polish test settles it in twenty minutes. A small area is compounded by hand or machine and then wiped with alcohol to remove the oils. Oxidized but sound clear will come up glossy and stay glossy. Failed clear will look brilliant while wet with polish and go dull again as soon as the residue is removed, because the polish is filling voids in a degraded film rather than leveling a solid one.

Visual signs confirm it. Sound clear that is merely dirty shows uniform dullness that a wash improves. Failing clear shows a milky white cast that follows sun exposure patterns, often with a distinct boundary where a rub rail or an awning has been shading the surface. Crazing, which looks like fine cracks in dried mud when viewed closely, means the film has lost flexibility and no longer moves with the panel.

Edge behavior is the last confirmation. Run a fingernail or a plastic scraper along any existing chip, at a decal boundary, or at a panel edge. Sound clear resists. Failed clear lifts in a flake and keeps lifting, often revealing a clean line where the coating has already separated from the color beneath it across a much larger area than the visible damage suggested. A strip of masking tape pressed down firmly and pulled fast is the cruder version of the same test, and on a compromised panel it lifts clear with it.

Deciding scope: which surfaces actually get re-cleared

Break lines govern the boundary, exactly as they do on any refinish. Clear cannot be feathered to nothing in the middle of an open surface, because a thinned edge yellows, lifts and telegraphs. So the scope extends from the failed area out to the nearest defensible boundary: a cap seam, a rub rail, a slide box edge, a compartment door perimeter. That often means re-clearing more area than has visibly failed.

Adjacent condition should be weighed against a second visit. If the roof cove has failed and the upper flank shows early milkiness, treating both now costs less than treating the cove today and the flank in eighteen months, because the second visit repeats the masking, the setup and the booth time. A film reading and a polish test on the adjacent surface make that argument with evidence rather than with sales pressure.

There is a threshold where full vehicle refinishing becomes the better answer. When failure has jumped to several separated zones, or when sound surface is the minority rather than the majority, the incremental cost of doing everything at once is small relative to the value of a uniform result. New clear also reads deeper than the surrounding original, so a re-clear stopping at an arbitrary point can look like a repair from certain angles. Piecemeal re-clearing across a widely degraded coach produces a vehicle wearing several slightly different finishes at the same time.

What happens once the failed clear comes off?

Removal is mechanical, not chemical. Chemical strippers attack basecoat and can migrate into seams, sealant and window gaskets where they keep working long after the panel looks clean. Sanding with a dual action machine, working through progressively finer grades, gives control and lets the operator watch continuously for the moment the clear is gone and the basecoat is exposed. Grades typically start at 320 or 400 for bulk removal and step to 600 before any new material goes on, and discs are changed often. On filon in particular, that moment arrives fast.

The exposed basecoat is then evaluated. Color that is uniform, solid and not powdering can be scuffed, cleaned and re-cleared directly, which is the least expensive outcome. Color that wipes off on a cloth, shows the primer through it in patches or reads dramatically lighter than shaded areas of the same panel has degraded and must be resprayed. That decision is made panel by panel and shared with the owner before spraying begins.

Where basecoat is being added back, matching becomes part of the job. The surrounding surfaces have aged, so the color is measured off a protected area and off an exposed area, and a formula is chosen that reconciles the two. On a re-clear that spans an entire bounded surface, matching pressure drops considerably, which is another argument for scoping to real break lines rather than to the smallest possible patch.

Why did the clear fail in the first place?

Exposure is the primary driver and it is not evenly distributed. A vehicle stored outdoors in inland Riverside County accumulates ultraviolet dose far faster on its roof and its south facing flank than on anything shaded. Coaches that live under a carport for years and then spend two summers in open storage often fail suddenly, because the absorber package was already partially consumed and open exposure finishes it quickly. Heat compounds it. A dark roof cap runs hotter than ambient on a summer afternoon, and every degree speeds the chemistry that consumes the absorber.

Neglect accelerates it. Ultraviolet absorbers are consumed as they work, and a film that also carries embedded contamination, acidic bird residue and hard water mineral runs hotter and degrades faster. Regular washing and any form of sacrificial protection, whether a sealant or a silica coating, meaningfully slows the process. Dark contamination is the worst of it, because a layer of baked road film absorbs energy that a clean panel would have reflected. Vehicles that are washed twice a year and never protected fail years earlier than identical units that are maintained.

Original application quality plays a role too. Thin clear applied to hit a production target has less absorber in it simply because there is less film. Some coach builders spray a lighter clear on lower sidewalls and a heavier one on caps, which is why failure patterns sometimes follow build boundaries rather than exposure. Previous repairs done with automotive clear lacking flexibility additives fail early at the edges of the repair.

01Can you just spray new clear over my dull RV without sanding?
No. Clear applied over a failing film inherits that failure, because the new coating is only as sound as what it bonds to. Within a season the old layer continues to break down underneath and takes the fresh clear with it, usually lifting in large flakes. The failed material has to come off mechanically and the surface has to be sanded to a sound, uniform base before anything new is sprayed.
02How do I know if my basecoat survived under the bad clear?
It cannot be known from outside. A test area is sanded through the clear in an inconspicuous spot, then the exposed color is wiped and inspected. Solid, uniform color that does not transfer to a cloth means a re-clear is viable. Powdery pigment, patchy coverage or primer showing through means color has to be added back. That test is done before the estimate is finalized.
03Is re-clearing cheaper than painting the whole motorhome?
Per surface, yes, because the color stage is skipped and the prep is lighter. Across a whole vehicle the gap narrows quickly, since masking, setup and booth time are similar either way. Re-clearing makes clear economic sense when the failure is contained to one or two bounded areas and the rest of the exterior is genuinely sound. It stops making sense once failure is widespread.
04How long before the new clear starts failing again?
That depends far more on how the coach lives than on the product. A modern clear with a full ultraviolet absorber package, applied at correct film thickness and maintained with regular washing and a sacrificial coating, holds gloss for many years under Southern California exposure. The same coating on a vehicle parked uncovered and washed rarely will show early dulling much sooner. Covered storage is the single largest variable.
05My travel trailer has failed clear over the graphics. What happens to the decals?
They come off. Clear removal takes the decal with it in almost every case, and a decal that has been under failing clear is usually brittle anyway. Plan on the graphics being replaced as part of the job. That is often welcome, since old vinyl leaves a ghost outline in aged paint, and addressing the coating and the graphics together is the only way to eliminate that shadow.
