A one-piece fiberglass roof is the premium option and it does not fail the way rubber does. There is no sheet to shrink, no adhesive bond to release across a field, no chalking. What it does instead is craze, crack and delaminate, and it does those things at specific places: around penetrations where the shell was cut, at the transition to the front and rear caps, and wherever something heavy has been mounted to it.

Because the shell is structural, damage to it is structural. A crack in a rubber membrane is a waterproofing problem. A crack in a fiberglass roof is both a waterproofing problem and a strength problem, and it will propagate under flexing until it is stopped. Drilling a small hole at the crack tip is a legitimate field measure to arrest growth, but the real repair grinds the crack out and replaces the laminate.

The upside is that a properly repaired fiberglass roof is genuinely as good as new in that area, arguably better since a hand layup with modern resin is often heavier than the original chopped strand. Work here is done indoors at the Yorba Linda shop with controlled temperature, which matters because resin cure is temperature dependent and an outdoor layup in Inland Empire summer heat kicks off far too fast.

What causes cracks in a fiberglass roof?

Concentrated load and flex. Every opening cut into the shell for a vent, an air conditioner or a skylight creates a corner, and corners concentrate stress. Add the coach twisting over uneven ground and the crack starts at that corner and walks outward. Roof-mounted accessories installed without proper backing do the same thing, which is why poorly mounted solar racks are a frequent source of cracking on otherwise sound roofs.

Impact is the other cause and it is usually a tree branch or a low clearance strike. Those produce a star pattern or a puncture with fractured laminate around it. What makes impact damage tricky is that the visible crack is smaller than the damaged area. The laminate around the strike has often lost its bond internally even where the gelcoat looks intact, so the repair boundary is found by tapping rather than by eye.

How is a structural fiberglass repair performed?

The damaged area is ground to a taper, typically twelve to one, so the new laminate has a long bonding surface rather than a butt joint. Any wet or debonded core material found under the shell is removed and replaced. Then the laminate is rebuilt with alternating layers of chopped strand mat and woven cloth in polyester or epoxy resin, built past flush so it can be ground back to exact contour.

Contour is the hard part on a roof because it is a large, shallow curve and any high or low spot catches the light. Fairing is done with long boards and guide coats, checking repeatedly against the surrounding surface. Once the shape is right, the area is sealed, primed and refinished with gelcoat or a topcoat that matches the existing roof, including matching the reflective white that keeps interior temperatures manageable.

What about delamination between the shell and the core?

Fiberglass roofs are usually a laminate over a foam or balsa core with the interior ceiling below. When water gets in, or when the original bond was marginal, the shell separates from the core and the roof develops a soft, oil-canning area that flexes underfoot. Tapping across the roof maps the extent, and the sound change is unmistakable once you have heard it a few times. Chalk marks around the perimeter record what the tapping found.

Small debonded areas are treated by drilling injection ports, vacuuming out debris and moisture, and pumping structural epoxy in while the area is clamped or weighted flat. Large areas are opened, the wet core is removed, new core is bonded in, and the shell is relaminated. The decision point is roughly whether the area can be reliably wetted out through ports, which depends on both size and how much debris is in the void.

Can a whole fiberglass roof be refinished?

Yes, and it is worth considering on a coach where the gelcoat has crazed broadly from ultraviolet exposure. Crazing is a network of fine surface cracks that do not yet penetrate the laminate, but they hold dirt, they let water sit against the glass, and they eventually deepen. Compounding and polishing helps early on. Once crazing is established, a resurface is the durable answer. Waiting past that point lets the cracks reach the laminate underneath.

The process strips or heavily abrades the old surface, addresses individual cracks properly rather than filling them cosmetically, then applies a new gelcoat or a high-build coating system rated for horizontal exposure. Every penetration is lifted and rebedded during the work, which is a substantial part of the value since those are the leak points anyway. The result is a sealed, uniform roof that reflects heat the way the original did.

01Is a fiberglass roof better than a rubber one?
For durability and appearance, generally yes. There is no membrane to shrink, no chalk streaking and no adhesive field to release. The tradeoff is that when a fiberglass roof does get damaged, the repair is a laminate job requiring skill and cure time rather than a patch, so individual repairs cost more. Over the life of a coach most owners come out ahead with fiberglass.
02There is a crack near my vent. Can I just seal it?
Sealing stops water today and does nothing about tomorrow, because the crack is a structural failure that will keep growing under flex. If you need a temporary measure, drilling a small stop hole at the crack tip genuinely helps arrest propagation. The real repair grinds the crack out, rebuilds the laminate on a tapered bond surface, and refinishes so the roof regains strength at that point.
03My roof feels soft in one area but there is no crack. What is happening?
The shell has separated from the core underneath. That happens from water intrusion or from a marginal original bond, and it produces exactly what you describe: flexing with no visible damage. We map the extent by tapping and listening for a dull tone, then either inject and clamp the area or open it, replace wet core and relaminate depending on the size.
04Can you match the finish on the rest of my roof?
Yes. Roof surfaces are typically a reflective white and matching them is more straightforward than matching a metallic body color. Where the surrounding roof has yellowed or chalked significantly, the honest options are refinishing a larger area or accepting a difference that is only visible from above. 05How long does fiberglass roof work take?
A contained crack repair with refinishing usually runs three to eight days including cure time. Delamination work and full roof resurfacing move into the two to four week range, and larger projects go longer. Resin cure is temperature dependent and cannot be rushed, which is one reason this work happens indoors here rather than in an open yard.
