The body is a shaped shell, usually aluminum or composite skin over a wood or foam core frame, and the whole profile is a continuous curve from the front to the bottom of the rear hatch. Galley hatch, hinge and seal

A galley hatch has to seal against a compound curve while being lifted and dropped hundreds of times. Continuous hinges loosen at the fastener line as the rivets or screws wear their holes, and once the hinge line has any play the hatch shifts and the seal contact goes uneven. Repair replaces the hinge with correctly sized fasteners into repaired or reinforced backing, rather than moving up a screw size into the same tired material.

The seal itself has to be selected for the compression range at that specific gap. A bulb seal that is too stiff holds the hatch open at the latch and leaks at the top; one too soft collapses and leaks at the bottom. Teardrops ride on a single axle with a light frame and a tongue that carries the coupler, the jack and often a battery box and a propane bottle. That concentration of weight at the front is what cracks tongue welds. Frames on owner built teardrops in particular are worth inspecting closely, because the tongue to main rail joint is frequently made with insufficient weld penetration or without a gusset. Repair grinds out and rebuilds the joint with proper preparation and adds reinforcement.

Inside, the systems are minimal but they matter. A twelve volt distribution panel, cabin lights, a fan, a battery on the tongue and a galley with a small fridge or cooler slide. Common findings are wire routed through drilled holes without grommets, a battery box with no ventilation, and a fan penetration in the curved roof sealed with the wrong product. Each of those gets corrected while the interior is accessible.

01Why does my galley hatch leak only at the top?
Because the hatch has dropped at the hinge line. A loose continuous hinge lets the hatch settle slightly, which increases the gap at the top of the curve while the latch pulls the bottom tight. Adding a thicker seal masks it briefly and then fails again. The correct fix restores the hinge line, reinforces the backing material and then selects a seal matched to the corrected gap.
02Can a dent in the curved side be repaired invisibly?
In most cases yes, but it takes more preparation than a flat panel would. The area gets supported from inside and worked back to shape, then the surface is blocked along the length of the curve so the correction blends into the surrounding profile. Finish is checked in raking light before clear goes on, because that is the condition under which any remaining wave shows.
03Are owner built teardrops repairable to the same standard?
Yes, and they often need structural attention as well as bodywork. Common findings are tongue welds with poor penetration, framing sized by guesswork, and skin fastened without allowance for movement. Those items get documented with photographs, corrected with properly designed details, and then the cosmetic work follows. The inspection report separates safety items from appearance items.
04Is it worth insulating and refinishing an older teardrop cabin?
Frequently, because the cabin is small enough that a full interior refresh is a contained project. Wall panels come out, damp or compressed insulation gets replaced, wiring gets rerouted with proper protection, and new panels go in with a finish the owner selects. Doing that while the skin is off for bodywork saves duplicating the disassembly later.
