A forty foot coach has roughly the surface area of a small house, and treating it like a large car produces poor results. The exterior includes gelcoat over fiberglass, painted panels with clear coat, bare and clear coated aluminum, decal vinyl that is often failing, rubber or fiberglass roofing, and dozens of feet of sealant bead. A single compound and one pad across all of that damages some surfaces while barely touching others.

The order of operations decides the outcome. Cleaning comes before decontamination, decontamination before correction, correction before protection. Skipping the decontamination stage means grinding embedded contaminants into the surface with the polishing pad, which creates the fine scratching that people mistake for swirl marks caused by the machine. Doing the sequence properly takes longer and produces a result that lasts through more than one season.

Coaches arrive from Eastvale in every condition from lightly dusty to fully chalked after years parked outdoors. Both get the same evaluation: paint thickness and surface condition checked panel by panel, a test section corrected to establish what the finish will actually do, and a plan built from that result. Showing an owner a corrected test panel next to an untouched one is more useful than any description of expected outcome.

What brings this in

  • Chalky residue transferring to a hand from the sidewall
  • Finish looking flat and dull under direct sun
  • Black streaks running below roof edges and vents
  • Aluminum siding stained and pitted
  • Persistent odor inside after cleaning the surfaces
  • Water no longer beading anywhere on the body
  • Decals lifting or cracking at the edges

Wash, Decontamination and Preparing the Surface

The first stage removes what sits on the surface. A pH neutral wash with proper technique lifts road film without stripping existing protection. Then chemical decontamination addresses what washing cannot: iron particles embedded from brake dust and rail dust, tree sap, tar and overspray. A dedicated iron remover dissolves ferrous particles that would otherwise tear through a polishing pad and drag across the finish.

Mechanical decontamination follows with a clay medium that shears off remaining bonded contaminants. On a large vehicle this is a substantial amount of work, and it is also where most of the improvement in surface feel comes from. Skipping it saves hours and costs quality, because everything the correction stage does afterward is applied to a surface that still has grit locked into it. Sealant beads and trim are masked before any machine work begins.

  • pH neutral wash performed with a two bucket method and clean media
  • Chemical iron removal before any mechanical contact
  • Clay decontamination across all painted and gelcoat surfaces
  • Sealant beads, trim and decals masked prior to machine work
  • Test section corrected to establish achievable results

Oxidation, Correction and Knowing When to Stop

Oxidation on gelcoat is a degraded surface layer that has lost its resin binder, leaving exposed pigment that looks chalky and transfers to a hand. Correction removes that layer mechanically with a compound aggressive enough to cut it and a pad matched to the surface. Gelcoat is thicker than automotive clear coat and tolerates more correction, which is why heavily oxidized fiberglass coaches often respond dramatically to a process that would be reckless on a car.

Painted panels with clear coat need restraint. Clear is finite, and once it is gone the only remedy is refinishing. We measure film thickness where the surface is painted, use the least aggressive process that achieves the result, and stop when readings say to stop rather than when the appearance suggests one more pass. Areas where clear has already begun to fail get identified early and quoted as refinish work instead of being polished into worse condition.

Protection, Roof and the Surfaces People Forget

Protection choice depends on how the vehicle is stored and used. A polymer sealant is straightforward, performs well for a season or two and is easy to refresh. A ceramic coating gives longer durability and better resistance to ultraviolet exposure, which matters considerably for a vehicle that sits outdoors in Southern California sun, at higher cost and with more demanding surface preparation. Neither prevents damage, and both make the next wash substantially easier.

Roofs get their own treatment. EPDM and TPO membranes need a cleaner appropriate to the material and a treatment that does not attack it, since petroleum based products degrade EPDM. Fiberglass roofs get cleaned and can be corrected and protected like the sidewalls. Roof work also provides an opportunity to inspect every sealant bead around vents, air conditioners, skylights and the front and rear caps, and we report anything that needs attention.

  • Protection selected for storage conditions and refresh interval
  • Membrane roofs cleaned with material appropriate chemistry
  • Sealant beads inspected and reported during roof work
  • Aluminum siding and diamond plate polished as separate processes
  • Rubber seals and slide gaskets conditioned to slow drying

Interior Work and What Actually Makes a Difference

Interior detailing on a coach means fabric, vinyl, leather, laminate, sealed and unsealed wood, carpet and window treatments in a confined space where odors persist. Extraction on upholstery and carpet removes what surface cleaning redistributes. Vinyl and leather get cleaned and conditioned with products suited to each rather than a single interior spray. Hard surfaces get cleaned and left without a greasy dressing that attracts dust for the next month.

Odor is usually the complaint that matters most, and it is rarely solved by fragrance. Sources include a wet carpet pad from a past leak, holding tank vent issues, refrigerator drip tray growth and air conditioning condensate pans. Finding and correcting the source produces a lasting result. We check those locations as part of an interior service and report what we find, since some of them point at repair work rather than cleaning.

Full Detailing questions

01How much oxidation can be removed from an older fiberglass coach?
Frequently a great deal. Gelcoat is thicker than automotive clear coat, so it tolerates a more aggressive correction process. We prepare a test section first and show the corrected area beside an untouched one, which sets an accurate expectation before the full job is authorized. Where degradation has gone through the gelcoat to the laminate, refinishing rather than correction is the honest answer.
02Is a ceramic coating worth it on a recreational vehicle?
For a vehicle stored outdoors in strong sun, it offers real advantages in durability and ultraviolet resistance compared with a polymer sealant, and it makes washing considerably easier over a large surface. It costs more and requires more preparation. For a coach kept under cover and used a few times a year, a quality sealant refreshed periodically is often the more sensible expenditure.
03Can you remove the black streaks below the roof edge?
Usually yes. Those streaks are sealant plasticizer and accumulated road film washing off the roof, and they respond to a dedicated cleaner followed by correction where they have etched the surface. They return unless the source is addressed, so we inspect the roof sealant during the work and report anything that has degraded enough to be feeding the problem.
04Do you handle roof cleaning as part of a detail?
Yes, with chemistry matched to the roof material. EPDM rubber requires a cleaner that does not contain petroleum distillates, since those degrade the membrane. TPO and fiberglass roofs use different products. Roof work also gives us a close look at every sealant bead around vents, air conditioners and cap seams, and we report what needs attention.
05How long does a full detail take on a large coach?
A proper multi stage correction on a full size coach occupies several days, because the surface area is large and each stage has to be completed across the whole vehicle before the next begins. Wash and protection without correction is much shorter. The published price band and hour range for this service appear on the prices page.
