Alternating current faults in a recreational vehicle behave differently than they do in a house, because the supply is not fixed. Pedestal quality varies wildly. Cord length adds resistance. A thirty amp coach plugged into a fifty amp post through an adapter is running a different load profile than the panel was designed around. Diagnosis therefore begins with what the coach is actually being fed, not with what the label on the inlet claims it should receive.
Symptoms tend to arrive as nuisance rather than failure. A receptacle in the bedroom stops working while the rest of the circuit stays live. A ground fault device trips whenever the water heater switches to electric. The microwave runs but the coffee maker on the same circuit browns out. Each of these has a discrete cause, and each is traceable with a load, a clamp meter and a thermal camera rather than with parts substitution.
Everything happens in the bay. The coach gets connected to a calibrated shop supply, run up to full load, and measured leg by leg while an infrared scan runs across the panel, the transfer switch and the inlet. On coaches with a power cord reel, the slip ring assembly gets checked too, because a worn reel contact produces exactly the same heat signature further upstream where nobody thinks to look.

Inside the main panel the failures are quieter. Aluminum feeders that were never re-torqued after the first heat cycle loosen. Neutral bars accumulate corrosion in coaches that have lived near the coast. Breakers that have tripped a few hundred times lose their calibration and begin nuisance tripping at seventy percent of rating. We torque every lug to specification, scan the panel under load, and replace breakers that show heat rise inconsistent with their neighbors.
Ground fault protection deserves its own attention. A device that trips whenever the electric element in the water heater energizes is usually reporting a real leakage path through a failing element, not a defective device. Swapping the receptacle in that situation hides a genuine hazard. We isolate the branch, megger or leakage test the suspect appliance, and separate a nuisance trip caused by long cord runs and accumulated capacitance from a genuine insulation failure.
Load Balance and Why the Air Conditioner Trips the Post
On a fifty amp coach, two hot legs feed the panel and each carries its own set of circuits. When both roof air units, the water heater element and the residential refrigerator all land on the same leg, that leg saturates while the other sits half idle. The pedestal breaker trips and the owner blames the campground. Rebalancing the panel so heavy loads alternate between legs frequently solves what looked like a capacity problem with no new equipment at all.
Thirty amp coaches have a different constraint, since everything shares one thirty amp feed. Here the answer is management rather than balance: an energy management system that sheds the water heater element when a compressor starts, or a soft start module on the roof air to cut inrush. We measure actual draw for each major appliance, then recommend the change that buys the most headroom for the least intrusion into existing wiring.

Receptacles, Wiring Methods and Bringing Old Work Up to Standard
Coach receptacles are frequently the push-in back stab type, and those contacts relax over time under vibration that a house never sees. A bedroom outlet that works when the coach is level and quits after a rough stretch of freeway is almost always a back stab connection that has lost tension. Replacing the device and landing the conductors on the screw terminals resolves it permanently, and we do that as standard practice rather than reusing the original wiring method.
Owner installed additions get the same scrutiny. Residential refrigerators, washer and dryer combinations, induction cooktops and shop inverters are often added without a dedicated circuit. We verify conductor size against the actual appliance nameplate, confirm overcurrent protection matches, correct any shared neutral arrangements that were improvised, and label the panel so the next technician is not guessing which breaker feeds what.
