Conversions arrive in two states. Some were built by professional shops with engineered mounting, properly sized conductors and penetrations that were flashed rather than caulked. The most consequential thing any conversion does to a van is put holes in it. Penetrations, condensation and hidden corrosion

Water in a converted van comes from two directions. Outside water enters at a penetration, usually at a fastener rather than through the sealant bead, and runs along a roof bow to appear somewhere unrelated. Inside water is condensation, produced by cooking, breathing and a propane appliance, which forms on the coldest surface it can find. In an uninsulated or poorly insulated van that surface is the steel skin behind the wall panel, exactly where nobody can see it.

Repair for both starts by opening walls and ceiling in the affected area. Corrosion that started behind a panel gets treated or the metal gets cut out and replaced. Insulation that has absorbed moisture gets removed rather than dried, because compressed and wet material will never recover its performance. Penetrations get pulled and rebedded on clean surfaces, and the rebuild includes a thermal break detail so the same condensation pattern does not simply resume.

Cabinetry, mounting and things that shake loose

A house does not move. A van on a washboard road moves constantly, and any cabinet fastened as though it were kitchen furniture will loosen. The common failures are screws driven into thin steel without a backing plate, cabinet carcasses built from material too heavy for the mounting method, and countertops fixed rigidly across a span that flexes. Symptoms are elongated screw holes, cracked joints at the cabinet back, and a countertop that has separated from its splash.

Rebuilding addresses the mounting first. Loads go into structure with properly sized backing, fasteners are chosen for the material they enter, and connections that must accommodate movement are detailed to allow it. Carcass repair uses joinery that resists racking rather than relying on fasteners alone. Countertop replacement, cabinet refacing, upholstery work and lighting upgrades are all handled here, so a repair can be the start of an interior refresh if the owner wants it.

Power, water and heating in a converted shell

Off grid systems in these vans are becoming genuinely large. Lithium banks measured in kilowatt hours, high output alternator charging, multi kilowatt inverters, several hundred watts of solar and shore charging all in one vehicle. Problems cluster at conductor sizing, overcurrent protection placement, ventilation and terminations. Corrections include resizing cable, relocating protection close to the source, adding ventilation to enclosed battery spaces, and re terminating with proper lugs and torque.

Water and heating systems get the same treatment. Fresh tanks mounted under the floor crack on road hazards, pumps lose prime through a blocked vent, and pipe runs fastened directly against sharp steel chafe through. Diesel and propane heater installations get checked for exhaust routing, clearances and combustion air. Everything gets tested with the systems running rather than confirmed by inspection alone before the van goes back to the owner.

01There is rust behind my wall panels. How did that happen?
Condensation, most likely. Warm humid interior air reaches the cold steel skin wherever insulation is thin, missing or compressed, and moisture forms there every cold night. Without ventilation it never dries. The repair removes wet insulation, treats or replaces the affected metal, and rebuilds with a detail that keeps interior air away from the cold surface rather than simply adding more of the same insulation.
02Can a poorly built conversion be corrected without starting over?
Usually. Most corrections are targeted: remounting cabinets into proper backing, resizing conductors, relocating overcurrent protection, rebedding penetrations and rerouting plumbing. A full teardown becomes the better option when there is widespread water damage behind the build or when the layout itself is the problem. The inspection separates safety items from convenience items so the owner can phase the work.
03Do you install solar and battery systems as well as repair them?
Yes. Solar panel installation, battery and charging systems, inverter and converter work, wiring and fuse box repair and shore power and transfer switch work are all in scope. Installations are designed around the actual loads rather than around a panel count, and mounting hardware gets fabricated where an off the shelf bracket does not suit the roof structure.
04Can layout changes be made during a repair?
Frequently that is the efficient moment to do it. If the galley is coming out for subfloor repair, moving it or rebuilding it to a different arrangement adds design and fabrication time but avoids a second disassembly later. Custom modification, custom storage solutions and cabinet work are all available, and the plan gets drawn and agreed before anything is cut.
