Wiring problems accumulate. A coach leaves the factory with a coherent harness, then gains a stereo, a backup camera, a lighting upgrade, a second battery, an inverter and a tire pressure monitor, each installed by a different person with a different standard. Ten years later the distribution panel has fuses of the wrong rating, three circuits share one feed, and a scotch lock buried behind a wall panel is slowly cooking. The failures that follow look random and are not.
Rodent damage is the other frequent cause, particularly on vehicles stored outdoors between seasons. Mice chew insulation for nesting material and favor the soy based coverings used on many modern harnesses. The result is bare copper against bare copper in a loom, producing intermittent faults that move around as the bundle shifts. Patching one wire in a chewed section rarely holds, because the neighbors are damaged too.
This shop approaches wiring work by mapping first and cutting second. What exists gets traced, labeled and documented. Abandoned runs get removed rather than taped off and left in the wall. Circuits get resized to the loads they actually carry, protected at the correct rating, and terminated with crimps and heat shrink instead of twist connectors. The panel leaves labeled, which is worth more to the next owner than most people expect.

Mapping a Panel Nobody Documented
The first hours of a serious wiring job are spent building a map. Each breaker and fuse is energized in isolation while a helper confirms what actually comes alive. Discoveries are routine: the bedroom receptacles fed from the kitchen circuit, the exterior lighting sharing a fuse with the propane detector, a fifteen amp branch protected by a thirty amp breaker because someone had one in the drawer. None of this is visible until it is tested.
The map becomes the basis for everything else. It shows which circuits are overloaded, which conductors are undersized for their protection, which additions bypassed the panel entirely, and where a single failure would take down several unrelated systems. Owners get a copy. It also gets applied as a physical label set inside the panel door, since a map that lives only on paper disappears within a year of leaving the shop.

Harness Repair After Heat, Chafe or Rodents
Damaged harness sections are cut back to sound insulation on both sides of the injury, which is often further than it appears. Conductors are joined with correctly sized butt connectors crimped with a matching die and sealed with adhesive lined heat shrink, staggered along the bundle so the repair does not create a rigid lump that chafes. Where more than a few conductors in a section are compromised, replacing the whole run is faster and lasts longer than splicing each one.
Prevention is part of the repair. Runs get rerouted away from the sharp edge or hot component that caused the damage, protected with split loom or convoluted conduit, and secured with clamps at intervals that stop movement. Rodent damaged vehicles get their entry points identified and closed where practical, since a rebuilt harness in a coach that mice can still access is a repair with a short future.
Correct Sizing, Correct Protection
Conductor size is chosen from current and length together, not current alone. A twelve gauge run is fine for a fifteen amp load over six feet and marginal over thirty, because voltage drop compounds with distance. Direct current circuits are especially sensitive since the available voltage is small to begin with. We calculate drop for each rebuilt run and step the gauge up where the math calls for it, which is frequently one or two sizes above what was originally installed.
Overcurrent protection then matches the conductor, never the load. A fuse protects wire from burning, not the appliance from failing. Owners often ask for a larger fuse when one keeps blowing, and that request usually signals a fault worth finding rather than a rating worth raising. Every added circuit gets its own device at the panel, sized to the smallest conductor in the run, and inline fuses get placed close to the source they originate from.

Panel Replacement and Bringing a Coach Back to Coherent
Sometimes the distribution panel itself is the problem. Corroded bus bars, cracked breaker mounts, a converter section that has failed inside a combination panel, or simply a unit with no remaining spare positions all argue for replacement. Newer combination panels integrate the converter, the direct current fuse block and the alternating current breakers in one assembly, which cleans up a great deal of improvised wiring in a single step.
Replacement is also the moment to correct accumulated shortcuts. Grounds get consolidated onto a proper bus bar with individual studs. The chassis bonding path gets verified. Conductors get lengthened where they were stretched. Circuits get grouped logically so the labels mean something. Coaches leave here with a panel that a technician in another state can understand from the door label, which matters more than any single repair performed inside it.
