Coach cabinetry fails in a predictable order. Doors sag first because Euro-style hinges lose their adjustment and the screws work loose in thin plywood. Drawer boxes fail second, usually at the bottom panel where a dado joint gives up or at the slides, which in many coaches are the lightest duty version available. Panels swell third, wherever they have been near a sink, a shower or a leak.
None of that means the cabinets need replacing. The boxes themselves are usually sound because they are screwed or stapled to the wall and to each other in a way that gives them collective strength. What has failed is doors, drawers and hardware, and all three are addressable at a fraction of the cost of new casework. Refacing takes that further by changing how the entire interior looks while keeping the structure.
Refacing is the highest impact interior change per dollar in a coach. Replacing door and drawer fronts, adding new hardware and refinishing the visible box edges transforms a dated maple or cherry interior into something current, without touching plumbing, wiring, countertops or flooring. Owners in Eastvale considering a full remodel are often surprised at how much of what they dislike is solved by the cabinets alone.
What brings this in
- Doors hanging crooked or rubbing their neighbors
- Hinge screws that spin without tightening
- Drawer bottoms dropping out of their grooves
- Vinyl film peeling from door faces
- Swollen, soft edges near a sink or shower
- Doors that swing open while driving
- Drawers that will not stay closed in transit
Why do RV cabinet doors sag and how are they fixed?
Two causes, usually together. Concealed Euro hinges are adjustable in three axes and they drift out of adjustment over years of vibration. And the mounting screws sit in thin plywood or particle board that gradually loses its grip, letting the hinge plate move under load. The door then drops at the outer corner, rubs its neighbor, and stops closing flush. Owners usually notice the rubbing before they notice the sag behind it.
Adjustment alone works when the screws are still tight. When they are not, the fix is to restore the material the screw threads into: drilling out the failed hole, gluing in a hardwood dowel or a threaded insert, and remounting to solid material. On doors that have been repaired repeatedly, we relocate the hinges slightly to fresh material. Then the doors are aligned as a set so the reveals are consistent across the run, which is what makes an interior look correct.
- Hinge adjustment restored across all three axes
- Failed screw holes rebuilt with dowels or inserts
- Hinges relocated to fresh material when necessary
- Reveals aligned across the whole run, not door by door
- Catches and dampers replaced so doors stay shut in transit
What can be done about swollen or delaminated panels?
Swelling means the core absorbed water, and once particle board or medium density fiberboard swells it does not return. The material has expanded permanently and its surface has lifted. Small areas at a door edge can sometimes be trimmed, filled and refinished acceptably. Anything larger is replaced, and this is a strong argument for replacing that part with plywood so the same failure does not recur in the same place.
Thermofoil is the other common failure. Many coach cabinet fronts are a vinyl film heat-formed over a substrate, and heat plus age releases that film, usually starting at a corner near a range or a window. Once thermofoil begins peeling, it continues. Those doors are candidates for replacement or for stripping and refinishing as solid painted fronts, which often looks better than the original did. Painted fronts also let you leave the dated wood tone behind entirely.
What does cabinet refacing involve?
New door and drawer fronts are made to the existing openings, the visible face frames and box edges are covered with matching veneer or laminate or refinished in place, and new hinges, slides and pulls go on throughout. The boxes stay where they are. Because coach cabinet openings are rarely standard sizes, every front is made to measure, which is a routine operation rather than an exotic one. Openings get measured individually because they vary within the same coach.
The alternative to refacing is refinishing, which keeps the existing doors and changes their color. That works well on solid wood and on veneered fronts in good condition, and it is less expensive. It does not work on thermofoil or on doors that have already swollen. We look at what you actually have and tell you which path fits, since refinishing a set of doors that are about to delaminate is money wasted.
- Fronts made to measure for non-standard coach openings
- Face frames and box edges veneered or refinished to match
- New concealed hinges with soft close where the frame allows
- Drawer slides upgraded to full extension where depth permits
- Refinishing offered where the existing fronts justify it
How are drawers made to survive travel?
Coach drawers face a problem household drawers do not: they get slammed back and forth over every mile of road. Original construction is often a stapled box with a bottom panel in a shallow groove, and that joint eventually works loose. Rebuilt drawers use glued and mechanically fastened joinery with a properly captured bottom, which costs very little more and lasts indefinitely. The difference is invisible from the front and obvious in daily use.
Slides matter as much as boxes. Many coaches use light duty roller slides with a simple detent that is meant to hold the drawer closed in transit and often does not. Upgrading to ball bearing full extension slides with a positive travel latch means the drawer stays shut on the road and opens fully when you are parked. Where a drawer holds real weight, the slide rating gets selected for that load rather than assumed.
