Nothing wrecks a fender skirt faster than a tire coming apart at highway speed. A separating tread throws chunks upward and rearward with real force, and on a coach the fender is thin laminate with nothing behind it. Owners typically arrive with a hole punched through the skirt, torn sealant along the wheel opening, and damage continuing back along the lower quarter where the debris kept traveling.

Curb and gate damage produces a different pattern. It concentrates at the leading edge of the fender, pushes the skirt inward toward the tire, and cracks the joint where the fender meets the sidewall. Because that joint is a sealant line, the repair always includes rebuilding the seal, not just fixing the visible break. Skipping it means water travels down inside the wall cavity and appears months later as a stained floor.

The lower quarter on any vehicle lives in the worst environment on the unit. Road spray, salt from the occasional mountain trip, gravel, and constant flex from the suspension right underneath. What does blowout damage actually involve?

The visible hole is the smallest part. Tread separation drives debris up into the wheel well at an angle, so the impact zone extends rearward and often upward into the sidewall above the fender line. Wiring runs through that cavity on many coaches, along with water lines on the wet side. The teardown therefore checks harnesses, plumbing and any tank strapping before the body work is scoped. Underbelly material torn loose during the event is inspected at the same time.

Structurally, the fender skirt on most units is a bonded laminate or a molded fiberglass piece screwed and sealed to the wall. A blowout usually tears it away from its fasteners along part of the opening. Repair means cutting back to intact material, bonding in new laminate or laying up fiberglass, restoring the wheel opening radius so it clears the tire, and rebuilding the sealant bead along the full perimeter.

How is corrosion in a lower quarter handled?

On steel-bodied trucks and vans the answer is cut and replace. Grinding rust and coating it leaves the corroded metal in place under a cosmetic layer, and it returns. The rotted area is cut out to bright metal, a patch panel is fabricated or sourced, and it is welded in with the seam dressed and the back side coated before anything closes up. Cavity wax goes into the enclosed section afterward.

On laminated coach walls corrosion is not the issue, water-swollen lauan is. Wet substrate loses all strength and turns to a soft mat that will not hold a fastener. The dry line is found with a meter, the affected substrate is removed, and replacement material goes in. We frequently substitute a composite board in that lower zone specifically because it does not wick water the way plywood does. That substitution costs very little and it changes how the area ages.

Does the paint have to be blended up the whole side?

Not usually. Lower body areas often have a natural termination: a molding, a rub rail, a two-tone break or the bottom edge of a graphic. Blending into one of those keeps the refinished area contained and gives the eye an excuse for any subtle difference. Where no break exists, the blend gets carried to the nearest structural seam and the transition is faded across enough surface that it is not detectable at normal viewing distance.

Fleet vehicles change the calculation. A white box truck or utility body has no graphics to fight and a single-stage finish that blends readily, so the refinished area stays small and the unit gets back to work quickly. A coach with a metallic base and a printed wrap crossing the quarter is the opposite situation, and the estimate reflects that difference honestly rather than pretending both are the same job.

What else gets checked while the fender is open?

An open wheel well is a rare look at parts of the vehicle nobody sees. Technicians check the leaf spring hangers and equalizer on trailers, the shock mounts, brake wiring, and the condition of the floor edge where it meets the sidewall. Finding a cracked spring hanger during a fender repair has saved more than one owner a breakdown on the way to the mountains. Trailer owners in particular rarely get a look at that hardware otherwise.

We also look at tire clearance and rub evidence. A skirt that has been contacting the tire will show polished streaks and heat marks. That points to a suspension or axle issue rather than a body issue, and repairing the fender without addressing the cause means the new skirt gets destroyed too. Anything we find goes in the report, whether or not it is work we are quoting. Photographs come with it so you can compare against a later inspection.

01A tire blew and tore up the side of my trailer. Is that one repair?
It is usually two or three. The fender itself gets rebuilt, the lower sidewall behind it often needs a laminate section, and there is frequently damage to wiring, plumbing or underbelly material inside the cavity. We scope each part separately so you and your adjuster can see the whole picture. Blowout claims are common and documenting the debris path clearly helps them go smoothly.
02Can rust above my wheel arch just be sanded and painted?
It can, and it will come back within a year or two. Corrosion continues underneath any coating applied over it because the affected metal is still there and moisture reaches it from the back side. The durable repair cuts the rot out, welds in clean metal, dresses the seam, and coats the cavity behind it. That costs more up front and considerably less over the life of the vehicle.
03Why does my fender keep cracking in the same spot?
Repeated cracking in one location means something is moving that should not be. Common causes are a loose fender mount, a failed body-to-frame isolator, a suspension component with play, or a skirt that contacts the tire under load. We look for the source before repairing, because bonding the crack again without fixing the motion just resets the clock on the same failure.
04How long does a quarter panel repair take?
A contained fender skirt repair with a local blend is typically three to eight days. Once the lower sidewall needs sectioning or a steel quarter needs a welded patch panel, plan on two to four weeks including refinish and cure. Parts availability moves that number more than labor does, so we confirm sourcing before giving you a target completion date.
05Will you check anything else while the panel is off?
Yes, and we report it whether or not we are quoting it. With a wheel well open we can see spring hangers, shock mounts, brake wiring, floor edge condition and underbelly integrity. Those items are not visible during a normal inspection. If something looks like a developing problem, you get photographs and a written note so you can plan rather than being surprised later.
