The entry door is the single most cycled component on a coach and it hangs in an opening that flexes every mile you drive. Manufacturers build these as a thin aluminum-skinned slab with foam core, hung on a continuous hinge, latching into a strike plate mounted in a framed opening. Nothing about that construction is heavy duty, and the wonder is that most of them last as long as they do.

Failures cluster into three families. Alignment problems, where the slab and frame no longer relate correctly and the door drags, whistles or leaks. Structural problems, where the skin has debonded from the core or the frame has been bent by wind catching the door. And hardware problems, where the latch mechanism, the deadbolt or the screen slider has simply worn out after thousands of cycles.

The most common single cause of catastrophic entry door damage is wind. An open door caught by a gust bends the hinge line, distorts the frame, and sometimes tears the retainer clean off the sidewall. That repair reaches into the wall structure around the opening, not just the door. Why does my entry door leak or whistle at highway speed?

A whistle is a compression failure. The bulb seal around the door is supposed to squash uniformly when the latch pulls the slab home. If the door has sagged, the seal compresses hard at the bottom and barely touches at the top, leaving a gap that produces noise at speed and admits water in a driving rain. A paper test around the perimeter shows exactly where compression has gone. That check takes two minutes and settles the argument.

The fix is sequential and the order matters. Alignment first, so the slab sits square in the opening. Then strike plate adjustment so the latch pulls the door into the seal rather than merely holding it closed. Then seal replacement with the correct bulb profile for the actual gap. Replacing the seal first, which is the intuitive move, usually produces a door that will not close properly and a new seal crushed flat at one end.

What causes an entry door skin to bubble or separate?

The door slab is a sandwich just like the wall. Aluminum skin, foam core, inner skin, all bonded with adhesive at the factory. Repeated slamming, heat cycling in a place like Riverside County where a closed coach hits extreme interior temperatures, and any water entering around the window insert all attack that bond. Once it lets go, the skin oil-cans visibly and the door loses rigidity. You can usually feel it as a flex when the door is pulled shut.

Small separations at an edge can be reinjected with adhesive and clamped flat. Widespread debonding is not worth chasing, because the slab has lost its structure and will keep moving. In that case we either source a replacement slab if the builder still supports it, or rebuild the door with a new skin bonded to a fresh core in the original frame. Rebuilding is common on older coaches and it produces a door stiffer than the original.

How is wind damage to a door and frame repaired?

Wind damage is a structural repair that happens to involve a door. The gust bends the door beyond the hinge geometry, and the load transfers into the frame and the wall around it. Before touching the slab, technicians check the opening for square, inspect the framing members at the hinge side, and look for cracked laminate radiating from the corners of the opening. That radiating crack is the tell that the wall itself absorbed the impact.

Repair works outward to inward: wall and framing first, then the frame extrusion is straightened or replaced, then the door is repaired or rebuilt and rehung to the corrected opening. Finally the latch and deadbolt geometry is reset. Trying to fix the door first against a distorted opening produces a door that closes but never seals, and the owner is back within a few months with a leak complaint. Sequence is most of the skill in this particular repair.

What about screen doors, window inserts and steps?

Screen doors fail at the slider and the corner joints. Rollers wear flat, the track collects grit, and the frame corners loosen until the whole assembly racks. Rebuilding a screen door with new rollers, cleaned track and re-tensioned corners is inexpensive and makes daily use pleasant again. Rescreening with a heavier mesh is worth doing at the same time since the door is already apart. Pet resistant mesh is the usual upgrade for owners traveling with dogs.

The window insert in the door slab is a leak source people overlook. It is bedded in butyl and held by a clamp ring, and that butyl hardens over time. We pull the insert, scrape both surfaces clean, rebed with fresh butyl and torque the ring evenly. Where a powered step is involved, its mounting and the door switch interaction get checked as well, since a misaligned door can prevent the step from retracting.

01My door has to be slammed to latch. Can that be adjusted?
Yes, and slamming is the thing to stop doing because it accelerates every other failure on the door. The cause is usually a sagged hinge line, a strike plate out of position, or a seal that has swollen. We check compression around the perimeter, correct the alignment, then reposition the strike so the latch pulls the slab into the seal with normal hand pressure.
02The skin on my entry door is bubbling. Is the door ruined?
Not necessarily. Small edge separations can be reinjected with adhesive and clamped. If most of the skin has let go, the slab has lost its stiffness and repairing it locally will not hold. At that point we either source a replacement slab where the builder still supports one, or rebuild the door with a new skin and core in the existing frame, which typically comes out stiffer than original.
03Wind caught my door and bent it. What is the scope?
Expect wall work in addition to door work. The load goes from the door into the frame and then into the sidewall, so we check the opening for square and look for laminate cracks radiating from the corners. Those get repaired first. Then the frame is straightened or replaced, then the door is repaired or rebuilt and hung to the corrected opening. Order matters here.
04Can you rekey my entry door to match the compartment locks?
In most cases yes. Entry latch and deadbolt assemblies from current suppliers can be keyed to match a set of compartment locks. On older coaches with obsolete hardware we replace the entry lockset with a current equivalent and adapt the slab cutout so the result looks factory. It is worth doing at the same visit as any other door work since the door is already apart.
05Do you fix the screen door too?
Yes. Rollers, tracks, corner joints, latches and rescreening are all straightforward and inexpensive relative to the improvement in daily use. We usually recommend doing the screen while the main door is being worked on, since the labor overlaps. Heavier mesh is available if pets have been hard on the original, and it holds up considerably better.
