Absorption refrigeration is unlike anything else in a coach. There is no compressor and no moving part in the cooling circuit. A sealed system containing ammonia, water, hydrogen and a corrosion inhibitor is heated at the boiler, and the resulting circulation moves heat out of the cabinet. Because nothing moves mechanically, the failure modes are chemical and thermal rather than mechanical, and they respond to a completely different diagnostic approach.

The most common complaint is a unit that cools on shore power but not on propane, or the reverse. That single observation splits the problem immediately. Propane only failure points at the burner, orifice, igniter, gas valve or manifold pressure. Electric only failure points at the heating element, its thermal fuse or the relay driving it. Failure on both sources points at the control board, the thermistor, ventilation or the cooling unit itself.

Ventilation is the quiet cause behind an enormous number of poor cooling complaints. An absorption unit rejects heat through a rear coil that depends on a chimney effect between the lower vent and the roof vent. Block that path with a nest, a poorly placed baffle, or a missing upper vent, and the unit simply cannot dump heat. Owners blame the refrigerator. The fix is often sheet metal and a fan rather than a new appliance.

Testing starts with the boiler area. A properly operating unit produces a specific temperature gradient up the boiler tube and a characteristic gurgle as solution circulates. A cooling unit that has developed a blockage from crystallized sodium chromate, usually after being operated well off level or after sitting for years, will show a cold boiler and a strong ammonia odor from the rear. That odor combined with yellow residue on the coils is a definitive finding.

If the cooling unit is sound, attention moves to heat input and control. The propane burner is checked for orifice blockage and correct flame. The electric element is checked for continuity and for the thermal fuse that protects it. The control board is examined for the burned traces and failed relays that are common on certain model runs, and the thermistor is tested at known temperatures since a drifted sensor tells the board to stop cooling far too early.

Ventilation, Baffles and the Chimney That Was Never Finished

Manufacturers install these units in a cavity meant to act as a chimney: cool air enters at the lower sidewall vent, passes across the condenser and boiler, and exits through a roof vent. Many installations leave the chimney incomplete, with a gap that lets hot air recirculate instead of rising out. Adding a baffle behind the condenser to force air across it, rather than around it, frequently drops cabinet temperature several degrees with no parts replaced at all.

Auxiliary fans help in hot climates and the Inland Empire qualifies. A thermostatically controlled fan mounted at the top of the cavity, pulling air upward past the condenser, extends the range in which an absorption unit can hold temperature on a summer afternoon. Insect screens at the lower vent need cleaning, since a mud dauber nest in the lower vent restricts the entire airflow path and produces exactly the same symptom as a failing cooling unit.

Twelve volt compressor refrigerators have largely replaced absorption units in van conversions and newer coaches, and they behave like a small residential appliance. They cool regardless of level, use far less energy than an inverter driven residential unit, and fail at the compressor, the electronic module, the thermostat or the sealed system. Diagnosis includes verifying supply voltage at the unit under starting load, since these compressors are sensitive to low voltage and will fault rather than run.

Residential refrigerators installed in coaches introduce a power problem rather than an appliance problem most of the time. They need inverter capacity and battery reserve to run overnight, and a variable speed compressor will not tolerate a modified sine wave inverter. When an owner reports a residential unit that shuts down while boondocking, we test the inverter, the bank and the cabling before touching the appliance, because the appliance is usually fine.

Seals, Racking and Making a Marginal Unit Work

Door gaskets flatten with age and stop sealing at the hinge side first. A gasket that fails a paper pull test at any point is letting warm air in continuously, which makes the unit run longer and hold less. Replacement gaskets are available for most models, and adjusting the door catch and hinges so the door closes squarely matters as much as the gasket itself. This is inexpensive work with a disproportionate effect on cooling performance.

Interior airflow also matters more than owners expect. Absorption cabinets rely on cold air falling from the fin at the top and circulating. Packing the shelves tightly blocks that circulation and creates warm pockets, which is why food near the bottom front spoils first. A small battery powered circulation fan inside the cabinet, plus sensible loading, closes much of the gap on a unit that is marginal but not failed.

Three findings together are conclusive: a strong ammonia odor at the rear, yellow or green residue on the coils, and a boiler that stays cold while heat is being applied. Any one alone is suggestive rather than definitive. If the boiler heats properly and none of that residue is present, the fault is almost certainly in the burner, element, board, thermistor or ventilation instead.
02Is a cooling unit replacement worth doing on an older refrigerator?
It depends on the cabinet and the door seals as much as the price. A sound cabinet with good doors and a functioning control board can justify a replacement cooling unit and continue serving for years. A unit with a cracked liner, failed hinges and a board that has already been repaired once is usually better replaced entirely, often with a compressor driven unit that removes the level sensitivity.
03Why does my refrigerator only struggle in hot weather?
Because absorption cooling depends on rejecting heat to ambient air, and its capacity falls as outside temperature rises. When ventilation is marginal, that reduced capacity crosses below what the cabinet needs. Correcting the airflow path with a baffle, clearing the lower vent screen and adding a thermostatic fan often restores usable performance without replacing anything in the sealed system.
04Can you convert a coach from absorption to a twelve volt compressor refrigerator?
Frequently yes, and it is a popular change. Compressor units cool faster, work off level, and use less total energy than a residential unit on an inverter. The conversion involves cabinet modification to fit the new unit, a properly sized direct current circuit, and confirming the house bank can support the load.
