Gravity moves a leak along a floor joist, across a chassis crossmember and out through the lowest point in a cabinet, which may be eight feet from the fitting that actually failed. Two materials dominate coach supply plumbing and they age very differently. Tanks, Sanitizing and Water That Tastes Wrong

Fresh tanks develop problems that have nothing to do with leaks. Biofilm forms on the interior surface of a tank that sat with water in it, and it produces a persistent odor that survives several flushes. Sanitizing with a measured solution, holding it through the entire system including the water heater and every fixture, then flushing thoroughly is the correct procedure, and doing it properly takes time that a quick rinse does not provide.

Tank mounting is the other frequent finding. Fresh tanks are heavy when full, and the straps or the plywood platform supporting them fatigue over years of road vibration. A tank that has shifted stresses its fittings, which is a slow leak waiting to start. We inspect supports, replace fatigued straps, verify that the fill and vent lines are routed without traps, and check the tank body for stress crazing around the fittings.

01Why does my water pump run every few minutes with nothing turned on?
The system is losing pressure somewhere. Common causes are a failed pump check valve, a toilet valve that weeps, a leaking fitting inside a cavity, or a waterlogged accumulator that no longer buffers. We isolate branches one at a time and watch pressure decay on each, which narrows the location quickly without opening every panel in the coach.
02Should polybutylene lines be replaced preventively?
If the material has already produced one failure, replacing the accessible runs is generally the sound decision, because embrittlement affects the whole system rather than one fitting. If it has never failed and the coach sees light use, monitoring is reasonable. We assess flexibility and look for crazing at the barbs, then give a straight opinion about which category the vehicle falls into.
03Can you find a leak without cutting into walls?
Usually. Air pressure testing with branch isolation locates the affected section without opening anything. A moisture meter then maps how far water has traveled through adjacent material. Access is opened only where the test points, and we open from the least destructive side available. Occasionally a cavity has to be opened to reach a fitting, and we say so before starting.
04How is the system sanitized and how long does it take?
A measured sanitizing solution is introduced into the fresh tank, distributed through every line including the water heater and all fixtures, and held for the required dwell time before a full flush. Doing it correctly occupies the better part of a day because the dwell period cannot be shortened. A quick rinse leaves biofilm in place and the odor returns within a week.
