Nobody enjoys this repair, which is exactly why it gets deferred until it becomes urgent. A hairline crack along a tank seam weeps slowly into the underbelly, where the coroplast catches it and hides it. By the time an odor reaches the living space, the insulation is saturated, the frame members underneath have started to corrode and the crack has grown along the seam. Early attention is dramatically cheaper than late attention on this particular system.
The failures themselves are mechanical and predictable. Polyethylene tanks crack at mounting points where a strap has fatigued and allowed the full weight of a loaded tank to flex the shell. ABS dump valves seize when the blade seal dries out and someone forces the handle. Cables stretch and jam. Flanges separate where a previous repair used the wrong cement on the wrong plastic. Each has a correct fix and several tempting shortcuts that do not hold.
Work happens with the vehicle on a lift and the underbelly opened properly rather than through a hatch. That access changes what is possible: supports get rebuilt, tanks get set square, valve flanges get bolted to a flat surface with new seals, and every joint is tested before the belly closes. Owners driving in from Eastvale should plan on the coach staying for several days, since a tank replacement is not a same visit job.

Cracks, Seams and Why Tanks Fail Where They Do
Rotationally molded polyethylene tanks are strong in the middle and weak at the transitions: around the fill fitting, at the flange boss, along the mold parting line and anywhere a mounting strap concentrates load. A tank supported by two straps that have stretched will flex through every mile of freeway with a full load of water pushing against the shell. That flexing eventually opens the parting line, usually near a corner.
Welding polyethylene is possible and sometimes appropriate for a small isolated crack in a sound tank, using extrusion or hot air welding with matching rod and proper surface preparation. Adhesives and epoxy patches do not bond reliably to polyethylene and fail under the flex that caused the crack in the first place. When the failure follows a seam for any distance, or the tank shows stress whitening around it, replacement is the honest recommendation.

Dump Valves, Cables and Flanges
A dump valve that will not open usually has a dried blade seal gripping the gate, and forcing the handle bends the cable or snaps the blade. A valve that will not close fully has debris trapped in the seal groove or a scored blade. Either way the correct repair is removing the valve body, cleaning the flange faces, replacing the seals and the blade, and reassembling with new hardware rather than reusing bolts that have corroded into their holes.
Flange failures are more involved. The flange bonded to the tank can separate when a previous repair used ABS cement on a polyethylene tank, which is a bond that never truly formed. Correcting it means removing the old flange completely, preparing the tank surface, and installing a mechanical flange with a gasket and through bolts, or welding a proper polyethylene fitting where the tank material allows. Both approaches beat another chemical bond that will not hold.
Vents, Sensors and Odor That Will Not Leave
Persistent odor inside a coach with an intact tank is nearly always a vent problem. The vent stack lets air into the tank as it drains and lets gas out as it fills. When a stack is crushed by a roof repair, blocked by a wasp nest, or terminated under an awning where wind pushes air back down it, the tank pressurizes and forces gas past the toilet seal into the living space. Clearing and rerouting the vent solves what a dozen chemical treatments cannot.
Level sensors give false readings for a different reason. Probe style sensors mounted through the tank wall read continuity through whatever is bridging them, which after a few years is a film of solids clinging to the probe. Cleaning restores accuracy temporarily. External sensing strips that read through the tank wall avoid the problem entirely and get installed while the tank is out, since retrofitting them later means dropping the tank again.

Macerators, Supports and Putting It Back Correctly
Macerator pumps grind waste so it can be moved through a small hose, and they fail from exactly what they are asked to handle. Impellers wear, cutter blades dull, and non dissolving material wraps the shaft and burns out the motor. Replacement includes checking the discharge hose for scale buildup and confirming the pump is fed by a properly sized valve, because a macerator drawing against a partially open valve cavitates and dies early.
Reassembly is where a tank job either lasts or does not. Supports get rebuilt with new strapping and, where the original platform has rotted, new backing. The tank sits level so it drains completely toward the valve rather than leaving standing waste in a corner. Every joint gets tested with water before the underbelly closes. Insulation goes back dry, and the coroplast gets fastened with proper hardware instead of screwed through in random locations.
